As Steve said when I ordered my first Hampsten...Welcome to the Cult.
I suspect you'll find that this bike will become your "home" position and banner standard. The Hampsten seems to quickly become the default ride to which all other bikes in the fleet are compared to.
Winter/rain riding? Perfect choice. Keep up with the "friendly" fast club ride? Strip off the fenders, and stick aero wheels with 23mm tires on it. Gravel road? Roly-Poly and drop that pressure as low as you dare.
Steve managed to get a single bike to do everything well. Remarkable.
Good call on the upcoming Ultegra post. That, or a Nitto in plain alloy would look good. I had a carbon on mine for the first while and it looked wrong. I replaced it with an old school Mavic alloy post - much better.

I'm guessing that with a Sachs and Spectrum also in the stable, such standards as "home position" and "banner standard" might not fully apply. I can't imagine you'd put any of those bikes down a notch to any of the others.Originally Posted by fixednwinter

That's the bike I almost ordered from Steve. Then I decided I really wanted the lugged version.
I think I've settled on a description for the ride: it rides like a bike. Sounds like hyperbole, but it just disappears under me...smooth, predictable, etc.
In re gravel: When I stopped in to visit the bike just after it was back from paint, I mentioned that I might have to take some gravel roads on occasion (I live out in the sticks); the look I got from Steve made me feel like a doofus for even thinking that. So, please, don't tell him.

Steve likely wasn't bothered at all that the bicycle would be tasked to handle gravel.

haha, of course I normally use other bikes for that :)
But I must admit, I get a sick satisfaction when I show up for a fast club ride on the Hampsten with a rear rack, sometimes keep the fenders on (leather mudflap and all), but I put on the 23 or 24mm tires. There's nothing more satisfying than attacking a group of riders riding production carbon frames on a hill, with a bike that almost looks like a touring bike!

late to the party - dang this east coast/west coast business!
lovely bike darren, and thanks again for letting us show it at Nahbs/Indy. this frame is essentially an Independent Fabrication Factory Lightweight, but we've tweaked the chainstays for extra clearance, we're using different seatstays for a more compliant ride, and the fork is built in-house here at the Towers.
this frame was designed around 57mm-reach calipers and Honjo 35mm fenders: it's a great combination but the fenders don't really allow for anything bigger than a 26mm tire. without the fenders a 30mm tire will work great so this covers some 'cross tires and most of my favorite road tires. but this is how darren and i designed the bike: a fast, stable all-road/all-weather training machine that ends up looking good and riding comfortably. (apologies for lapsing into sales-speak)
and thanks again to the folks at IF: great to work with, lovely frames and paint, super supportive and full of good ideas for my little enterprise. and it's fun to see Gary, Lloyd, Clint, and Kevin (hope i got all that right) participating on our spunky li'l forum.

Very true...hard to put any bike above those legends, certainly. A combination of IF welds and Hampsten geometry would probably put this one as an equal, perhaps?

Nicely done. Reminds me of my Norwester. I like the aesthetics of that fork much more than my Co-Motion steel fork, but I like the option of using either35 mm road fenders and maybe a 25c Michellin, or 45 mm fenders with something like a 30c Bourough. The road tires are more fun doing faster group rides. The fatter tires and fenders are more fun when it's just me kicking around any road I want to try. Either way, the one fender set or the other is on year round.
Steve, I wonder what your thoughts are on the respecitive forks. Can you make a fork like which looks Darren's which would work for either fender set?
