complete bike is under 16 pounds with hand built wheels. once i get down to 4% body fat, i'll fly on this bike!

Hey. Just wondering. On these frames that have the battery mounts that are on the underside of the downtube, can you put a water bottle cage there instead of the battery? I'm just concerned that the water bottle might hit the front tire, or that the cage would extend too far past the bottom bracket?

Nope, the dimensions are less - 35mm versus 65mm. I suppose one could do a custom cage, maybe for 375cl wine bottles.

Well that's too bad. I was dreaming up a great idea to put water bottle mounts on the underside of a downtube that would also double as a Shimano battery mount, so I could choose either to put a bottle cage there or a battery. Oh well. I guess that isn't possible.

Many of the lower priced aluminium bottle cages have a continuous bit of alu between the two bolts - I'm sure a drill and a careful operator could solve your problem.

Ron Andrews at King Cage will make you a waterbottle cage with whatever dimension you need between the holes. Every framebuilder should know about this, if you catch my drift.

What kind of sloppy framebuilders can't get the spacing between the two holes for the water bottle mounts? I understand that nobody's perfect, but I'd be kinda unhappy to get a custom frame with an obvious error like that.

That's a good idea, but I feel kinda bad already because the frames already gonna have two sets of water bottle bosses (st and dt) and I feel like I'd be really weakening the frame by putting 3 more tapped holes under the frame for another water bottle cage / battery. Well, I guess I could do that, but I also wanted to add 2 holeee tunnels for a down tube internal rear shift line and maybe even another tunnel for a hydraulic disc brake line.

I think it's more about the kind of special request you're talking about than frame builder incompetence. I've seen bosses brazed on frames for some weird things, like giant bottles on the fork for compressed gas tanks for an iditabike. I can imagine at least a few applications where you might have odd braze-ons for a really specialized application and being able to add a third bottle cage when it's not in use would be nice. Considering it's often Touring, Camping, or Rando bikes that opt for a third bottle in the first place, you're already dealing with some really specialized and labor intensive bikes from the word go. A specially placed braze-on is nothing compared to hand-built racks and internal wire routing for dynamo hubs. It's cool that the option exists, even if I never find an appropriate application for it.
