There was a time when I had the opportunity to trade off between these two bikes.

Regarding the blue MXL above, I got it about a month ago from a guy on the West Coast. He got it from a source in Belgium. I'm a bit puzzled about its age. I'm assuming it is an early to mid-90's frame. But I haven't seen any other MXL frames with this (hard to match) dark blue color and with the 'darts' on either side of the Merckx logo on the down tube. There is no pump peg and no number hanger. Serial number is H on left underside of BB, then D 9163 on right underside of BB. All chromed under the blue paint. Threaded headset, internal rear brake routing.

Unlike other MXL frames I've heard about, this one has ample clearance for 28mm tires front and back.

Really a wonderful riding frame. Very stable and comfortable, yet lively. Not a lightweight, but not much heavier than my straight gauge ti S&S bike.

Appreciate any info or insights others care to share regarding the provenance of this frame.

    Thanks.

PS. If I could wave a magic wand, I would give the top tube about a 3 degree slope back to the seat tube lug, make the head tube 15mm taller to avoid using the spacers in the headset, and throw in a pump peg, too. And then give it a fresh coat of paint. But for the price paid, it's been a great way to try out this tubeset and Century geometry. I like it a lot more than the SLX Corsa Extra I had, with the pre-Century geometry.

Here is a red one on Flickr labeled 1994. Looks like it is a Belgian bike too, if the top tube inscription is an indication of where it was sold.

That blue is a great color. I wouldn't worry too much about the spacers. Back when threaded headsets were the only option, I set up plenty of bikes with spacers like that. Or with the Mavic 305.

Hey thanks, Jorn. Good find. That red one is a good match - decals and no pump peg and all chrome under the paint. Fits into the approximate age range I was thinking of. That one is 'dressed' better than mine with all-Campy, too. Mine has 4 ages of Dura Ace on it: 7400 FD, 7700 STI, chain, and RD, 7800 brake calipers, and 9000 BB and crank. May switch it over to 11 speed one of these days. It's worth the upgrade.

Here lies the answer to the Red vs Orange question elsewhere on the forum.

Very possible! Seems like this has changed hands a few times, picked it up across the hall.

    EDIT: seller said this is either "28" or "88" /100, Rich's was #77 .

Reissue #28 . Mix of DA9000 and Ultegra 6800. White Industries T11 > Archetype wheels shod in 28c Corsa G+.

I've only had enough time to take it around the block, but so far, so good. A better fit at 57cm than my old 58cm, plus clearance for 28s.
