I have a Ritchey Classic stem that I could use with one of my Zipp SSR bars, but I was trying to avoid using 'current' stuff.

Depends how much I want to keep the Merckx I guess.

For what it's worth... A green Scotch brite pad will remove the Richey logos from the silver 'classic' parts without damaging the silver finish but making them look less modern.

Thanks - I already removed them with acetone though!

Got sent the wrong colour Cinelli Alter stem, but it doesn't look too out of place - just not entirely sure if I like it enough for it to stay. There's a vague temptation to strip is down and polish it, but I'm not sure I've got the patience.

That said, without the removable faceplate I'm not sure I've got the patience to put the Grammo back on either!

One thing I am tempted to do is to get the fork steerer threaded and change the headset. I reckon a quill stem would finish it perfectly.

    Sorry but...
    stem looks bloody awful
your bike but i think it would be a travesty to mess around with the fork...
sell the f and f on and admit defeat on this one (all meant in a non judgemental way :) )

Grammo is back on already. Despite being the same length and angle as the Alter it seems to be a taller stem which manages to reduce the drop and, in turn, reduces the reach a little. It's still a bit too long, but it might just be enough to be bearable...

Stick with it, it'll be worth it (and thank f**k you got rid of that alter - I'm surprised Steve P hasn't fined you for that!)

This is about as good as this bike will ever look:

As for that saddle, if it were still readily available I'd have one on all my bikes - it's delightfully comfortable. Genuinely.

While I love Campagnolo foremost...I think the only thing that could improve it is a Dura-Ace groupset in homage to the 7-Eleven, Motorola days...

Still a very nice bike though...

    Are you fyxamatosis?
    - i reckon it would look better with a full Record 10 speed group.

Just picked up from the LBS after a cleaning and refitting with a full Mavic 631 7-speed group. Love the starfish crank and Mavic 501 hubs... spin like butter.

Retro enough, but mostly ready for some cracked pavement and cow manure covered Wisconsin spring roads.

Bought the frame on Da Bay without original fork. I have another MXL with the original steel fork. Will stay as is until my "play account" recovers from recent activity.
