a better look at the build...

i have an early version of centaur (03 or 04) that i picked up on the salon on the bike -- pleased with how it turned out.

took it for a ride today -- will be a great everyday (to class, etc.) bike.

p.s. the guys at circle a are great; highly recommended!

I think that's the most beautiful Merckx I've ever seen! Great job on the build. I wouldn't change a thing!

    Nice MXL!

I used to ride this one about three years ago. It was a great handling ride, although sometimes a bit harsh.

Did Merckx ever offer a light blue as a stock color or did you and Circle A figure that all out?

It is exquisite, by the way.

not that i'm aware of; i went and talked to jay at circle a and looked at paint lids with him and decided on the color (from a range of light blues).

it's sort of like the color of my luigino (at my parents' house), but totally different...

Very happy to hear that this beauty is also going to be your daily driver. I also have an MXL that I don't hesitate to use for cyclocross and inner city commuting.

For the latter, I would recommend you buy one of those cheap, BMX top tube pads. I Velcro that on my MXL's top tube before I lock it to a post. Prevents the paint from getting scratched off, which in turn saves me from doing rust prevention on the outside.

And for the inside: Framesaver is your friend!

It's not the paint... But I think you already knew that.

Seriously, this bike is the most perfectly proportioned and set up bike I have seen in several years worth of trolling internet bike pictures, it makes me wonder at the alchemy: the long quill stem and deep but perfectly round Belgian-style bars for a long, flat transition to the understated silver levers, the white tape, saddle, and gumwalls. I am seriously in love with it as someone who is interested in bike aesthetics. I know several other forums and places pics are being passed around. This alone makes me think to tell you: be careful where you lock it up. Seriously. It's an object I think anyone (bike aesthete or no), would find visually appealing-- it's beautiful to me as a bike nerd but also just as an object in itself. Congratulations. I can only hope that it rides as nicely as it looks (and would probably sell my other bikes and proverbially 'marry' it if it does).

....And then there is this one from the current Merckx.be website. I never thought Eddie would do hipster, but this bike and the accompanying helmet are too much for me to stomach.

+1...however, Merckx isn't Merckx anymore (sold his shares in 2008) so I don't think we can hang the hipster on Eddy.

Yeah - this is what you get when the marketeers take over... Eddy has long said goodbye to steel.
My LBS called the old factory in Meise a few years ago to see if they still had some left stock of chrome forks. The answer didn't reflect much respect for their own heritage...
