Like a bike with just the right geo, proper bars, and handbuilt wheels.
    Some people just "get it".

Nice. I spent some time wandering around the Newport Shipyard a couple weekends ago. Holy cow eye candy. I found the draft of this particular boat to be quite impressive.

It was a joke making fun of bike folks who reflexively blame CF for failures unrelated to the actual material properties.

Seemed appropriate given the thread subject and what just happened to the Oracle boat.

nah im just kidding...ironically apart from the grace of mikes boat and the abject blackness of the oracle there's a lot of similarities between wood and Plastic boats....well the carbon ones at least

Years ago I did NYYC race week on a NY30...

Capt. Nat sure made some pretty sailboats.

It was pretty surreal to see that thing zipping around the bay from my office window. Impressive, but my own taste runs more to what's at the top of the thread. One of the Oracle boats from a prior race series is sitting in a pond in front of corporate HQ. Bizarre.

I wonder how much analysis they do beforehand to predict under what conditions it's safe / unsafe to sail that thing?

SteveP is remembering the Herreshoff Maritime Museum in Bristol, RI.

This is the sight of Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. from the late 1800's, until
destroyed in the 1938 Hurricane. Capt. Nat Herreshoff designed and built some of the
most beautiful, and technologicly advanced yachts of the late 19th and early 20th
    century.

Rightfully called the Wizard of Bristol.

vendee Vendée Globe 2012-2013 - Tracking is a huge and sick race! around the wrld alone non-stop. its brutal and includes the southern ocean. bruce schwabb was the 1st american to complete (he's a buddy btw, and he also races cyclocross - btw!) the french are mad for this type of sailing, but this is a global show!! i really encourage anyone that loves seeing guys tested to their absolute limit to learn/follow this race. its amazing. i won't go on and on, but this is the real deal as far as the outer limits of human endurance/endeavor. these guys have huge balls. go an sailing anarchy . com to keep abreast and see some fun stuff about this race. here's bruce going at it in 04/05

I was lucky enough to be on the water in Tortola during the Carribean Superyacht Regatta a year ago. Amazing boats there. They had a short race around some islands. A J Boat replica named Hanuman won. Best looking boat there. There's one in this set called the Cakewalk that costs almost 200k a week to rent.

What those big cats feel like to (someone who writes like) a landlubber.
Windsurfing shares a lot of that.

Damn, Vendee looking like sailing alone around the world, in a glorified racing dinghy.
