Default NOVA 29r tubeset 45mm HT

I just picked up one of the August special tubesets from Lon and co. and got the 45mm HT option. It measures 42.5 ID. What's the deal? I'm not seeing any headsets with a flange dia. in that neighborhood. I did pick up a few Paragon 44 headtubes FWIW. Thank you!

I bought one of those sets and just ordered the Paragon HT at the same time. Life is too short to figure out how to use some weird size when one size has taken over.

Its a nothing size, dont use it.
fwiw, it almost works for a bi-lam tube for thier 42mm DT. I used a piece of it as an embelishment on one.

I purchased it assuming that they has mis-stated the specs.... i was wrong.

Really? It's not 44mm ID? Surprising.

True Temper (Henry James) has head tube stock for 44.

Probably why the tubeset was on special;)
"Hey Lon, we got a bunch of head tubes that are the wrong size."
"Throw 'em in with some sets and we'll run 'em as a special. That'll get rid of them."

(Just kidding, Lon seems like a good guy)

Yeah, no, Lon is great and I did try getting some info about the HT from him but I'm sure he's busy. Guess I'll repurpose it in some way, some time.

Please call him - they had a bad issue with HT a few yrs ago, the ID was oversized and no one knew until allot of bikes went out the door.

I just tried to explain the problem while ordering fork crowns and they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about.

I'll follow up with another call on Monday. Hadn't thought of it being a quality control issue with the tube supplier, but that is making more and more sense.

I don't think it's quality control, the options are all weird

    drewgh2o,

I too picked up this tubeset on special to build a 29" MTB. Upon seeing your post, I measured and have the same size HT you do. Let me know what Nova says about this being a QC issue

    Apologies for the crotch shots.

is it possibly for an integrated head tube? I don't use them so I don't know the specs. They're a bit smaller than the semi integrated which should be approx 44mm.

Columbus® Type Headset (SHIS term: IS42)
The Columbus type headset uses a cartridge bearing holding-cup that is pressed into the frame. The frame has no special seat machined inside the headtube. The frame head tube has an outside diameter of 45mm and a machined inside diameter of approximately 39.9mm. A cup of 45mm outside diameter is pressed into the frame. The cartridge bearings sit above and below the frame in these cups. The bearings are nominally 41.5mm outside diameter and are a slip-fit into the cups. The bearing seat of the cups is 36 degrees. This headset allows the "image" of an integrated system by matching the headtube diameter with the cup outside diameter. The Columbus®-type headsets are not interchangeable with other types. Cups are typically painted with the frame, which assists to hide their appearance on the bike. Adjustment is similar to threadless headsets.

Columbus® offers this system to frame builders with steel headtube inserts. These inserts are welded into the frame and are then effectively similar to the integrated system described above. The insert system is also in the 36-degree angular frame contact.

as I said upthread, I can't imagine this is anything other than intentional. It would be nice if they would get with the program and offer a head tube that would match up with what we need for a tapered fork.
