I apologize in advance for this question - really - Trainers.
I'll ask it here to keep it out of the main forum, and after I get some answers I'll beg TT to torch the thread!
I have a Cyclops Trainer, which my daughter has commandeered. My darling wife now wants to "ride" with her during the winter so they can both prep for some rides next summer.
I have one trainer - which means I will have to get another - my LBS here has decided that it is now going to carry TACX. Are the Tacx any good, or should I break down and order a Cyclops from somewhere???
Humour me.
Re: I apologize in advance for this question - really - Trainers.
Sorry TMB, no experience but I'm interested in this too. My wife's looking at a Tacx with power... I'm not convinced. We've got a ~5 year old CycleOps Fluid 2.

I wasn't even looking at one of the ones with power, the "Booster" - I think it's just magnets but really know nothing about them.
Still trying to figure out what happened that this is all that the LBS seems to be carrying and I am pretty loyal to those guys.
Re: I apologize in advance for this question - really - Trainers.
I have used the Taxc computrainer copy. It was no computrainer, but it wasn't what I would call poorly built. It did the job, and had pretty interesting video game style courses.
I have a Kurt Kinetic, and I have found that to be the best I have used. Who am I kidding....all trainers suck.

This and this. I picked up the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine early this year and have put more miles on it than I'd have liked. It's quiet enough not to wake up my wife from one room over (which may have more to do with how deeply she sleeps) and it seems to suck as much as any other trainer I've used, which I think is the goal.
Re: I apologize in advance for this question - really - Trainers.
Kurt Kinetic, the Road Machine, I've had it for a year, great trainer. I still get on the rollers once in awhile, but for long sessions the trainer is the way to go, along with lots of race dvd's and a good playlist on on the i-pod. A necessary evil for those of us who have to deal with cold winters.
Re: I apologize in advance for this question - really - Trainers.
Tacx and Elite are both in a similar league. Their fluids are a step behind, but Euros still buy a fair number more magnetic -- and that is where they both do most of their business.
CycleOps and KK are both very solid fluid. I think that you shop is doing itself a disservice by only carrying one brand.
Re: I apologize in advance for this question - really - Trainers.
Always been a roller guy and the EMotions are the best training tool I've had. Gave my Krietlers to a teammate. Someone has my old Weyless rollers. Long gone and hopefully being well used still.
KK for when I need a fixed trainer. I have, but don't like the heavier freewheel so took it off.
Anyone have the 1-Up? Looks great for travel because of how it folds up. Never seen one in the wild....
Re: I apologize in advance for this question - really - Trainers.
Pretty much as I expected, thanks.
Will just pick up another Cycleops Magneto and then the ladies can do their thing.
I should just be happy that they are both "aiming" to keep it going through the winter.
Thanks.

For similar money, Kurt kinetic or 1 up, and score a nos wired powertap (they're around).
Or, best bang for buck, tru trainer rollers.
Thanks Robert. Looking for a wired powertap now.

Go figure, went in there tonight on the way home and they have a bunch of KK's as well.

Hard to get better advice than this - pretty much says it all.

I'm giving another vote for Kurt.
The lady bought one. Something was defective right out of the box but since it was her first trainer she had no idea. I got on it and it felt like I was riding a rumble strip. Called up Kurt about a year after it was purchased. I had a new fluid resistance unit within 3 days-- Minnesota to Los Angeles. A few months later I got a follow-up email from their VP making sure everything was OK.
Re: I apologize in advance for this question - really - Trainers.
Cyclops/Saris is another good company for customer relations. Had great experiences with em
Last I looked at em, it looked like Tackx was making Performance trainers. My only real experience with Tackx was a set of Nashbar rollers I got in college. Lasted till last year when somehow they developed a vibration.
I'm riding a Cateye Psychostimulator (aka Cyclosimulator) right now. When I ride a trainer at all. I'd much rather go outside, but that's me. Its noisy, but its got great 'feel' as well as a disc brake for 'hill simulations.'

That Cateye is still the best riding (aka road feel) of any trainer I've used. The LeMond Rev comes close to it.
New schedule could mean more time outside and less on the trainer, much prefer that.

Another vote for Kurt; solid product and really good support/customer service.
Re: I apologize in advance for this question - really - Trainers.
I just bought my second Kurt Kinetic. I save about $100.
eBay and Craigslist are the way to go. They're popping up constantly (more so on eBay) and the prices are better used. Most of the time they haven't been used much before they became dust magnets or, they're bulletproof so there's lots of life left in them even if purchased on the secondhand market.
