Learn to Build Carbon Fiber Frame
Hello,
I have lurked on this forum but this is my first post. I have gone through a frame building school and have built a few steel frames. My goal is to build carbon fiber frames though. There are a lot of great posts on this forum (Nick Crumpton's thread is amazing!) but is there an actual school or program to learn these techniques? Does anyone know of a carbon frame builder hosting an internship program?
Thanks!
Re: Learn to Build Carbon Fiber Frame
There seems to be lack of this Search fibreglast or something (if they still exist) In the UK theres a company called Dark Matter Composites who do this kind of thing he's an ex F1 guy that does training and despite being pricey he is bang on the money with training
Maybe someone stateside should do a course ,wonder why your UBI dont ,or do they ,I dont follow it anymore so wouldn't know but theres a small requirement for it if the number of folks i have seen on linkedin seem to be indicating
Unfortunately if you can't find the sources you will have to do it the way we did 20 years ago
just experiment Slap and dab get it wrong a few times ,seriously surfboards boats experimental planes thats how we all had to learn I read a book by Burt rutan where it was pretty evident even back then "we were all playing with glassfibre and glue" to make progress
There were no such thing as you tube videos etc and books were expensive as it was deemed "specialist"

This is great! Thank you for taking the time to reply!
Re: Learn to Build Carbon Fiber Frame
I found Nick Crumpton's posting invaluable as well. Here's a blog I made outlining my carbon frame building efforts so far...

Here's a long list of books and resources regarding working with composites-
MATS324 Composites Design and Manufacture
I no longer have my copy of Competition Car Composites by Simon McBeath and Brian O'Rourke but I thought it was a pretty good read for someone wanting to start molding composites in their garage.

I used to have a very large motorsport engineering library. Most of it is now gone- I had a very large stack of Racecar Engineering mags that went back to the mid 90's that I finally manged to clear out of my home office a couple of months ago. I just don't have the space for all those books and mags anymore- digital editions would be neat. I did manage to find a digital copy of one of my favorite books I used to own, which is Racing and Sports Car Chassis Design by Mike Costin and David Phipps.

Also found Framebuilders collective to be a great help. The legend(italy) factory video, the Cyfac video, some of the weight weenies threads, Carl Strong's website, Parlee's Patent(and the factory tours w/ video), as well as the other carbon frame patents. Can't recommend any person that's teaching. Ubi should offer something. Oh and the carbon section of Frameforum if its working. Also, found that west system tech are great guys to field questions.
Re: Learn to Build Carbon Fiber Frame
you should check out argonaut cycles, they've been posting a bit about their processes lately on fb, tumblr, etc. not super technical, but their process is interesting
