Default Mid 80's Pinarello Montello needs new decals

I know this has probably been discussed ad nauseum but I'm gonna ask it anyway....

Short of sending my beautifull Pinarello Montello to a frame builder for authentic decals and a clear coat, are there any decals out there that actually look good at less than 6 feet away? The ones I see on the internet "look" nice but I hesitate buying junk for $40 bucks.

A frame repair guy I talked to who was recommended by a reputable source said that it was they who basically commissioned a third party to make authentic decals and also has an agreement with Pinarello to only apply them to bikes they work on. I don't think these guys are selling me a bill of goods. I truly think he is telling me the truth and isw a reputable businessman. But, I don't want to have to strip the bike, send it off, pay ~$300 - $400 bucks JUST to get new decals (plus shipping charges). This guy charges $50 bucks for authentic-looking decals indiscernable from the originals (he says) except for the fact that they are designed for clear-coating and will last a lot longer. The paint on my bike is actually in remarkably good shape...hence I just want the decals...even if they do start to flake off after 10 years or less.

    Thoughts, suggestions, recommendations greatly appreciated.

If you can manage to get a high resolution image of the decals most any graphics place could duplicate them. Getting the image would probably be the catch though.

That's the hitch. The decals are so badly flaking that it's almost impossible to tell what color they used to be.

    Pinarello Decals | velociao

I have no direct experience with them. Just know the site from other information. Putting them on without proper prep and clear coat may mean a 10 year life is pretty optimistic though, especially under Scottsdale sun.

    J44ke and Diablo,

Yep, found those two sites as well, but thanks! It's hard to tell from their photos and descriptions how the decals will actually look. They are made with vinyl sheet and aren't the same type of decal that was put on the bike when new. Maybe I'm just being too anal....

The original decals were made to go under a clear coat for protection, but for whatever reason Pinarello put them on the surface or under only a very very thin clear. Pinarellos from that era all had disappearing decals. The vinyl stuff (AFAIK) is what you get when you are putting it on the exterior of the coating. Personally I don't see them as an upgrade over the ones that are falling off. Better to ride it as is and get a real redo when you can afford it.

Actually, I don't think even vinyl stuff is good without a clear over it.

Anyway, Yellow Jersey has transfers. I think that is what you are actually looking for. To me, decals are what Yellow Jersey calls "water slides" but what do I know, I am not a frame painter. See this pdf link for directions for application & differences: http://www.yellowjersey.org/decsheet.pdf

The transfers are here, and it appears they have Pinarello. Vintage Italian Professional Frame Transfers [Colnago Cinelli Alan Gios Rossin] from Yellow Jersey, Ltd

There are decals available on a major internet auction site that are very affordable. Let's see--cheap, authentic, durable--pick any one.

Those "waterslides" or "solvent slides" appear to be almost like the originals. I'm going to give those folks a call. Thanks for finding that!!
