Default Campagnolo and Shimano 11 speed cassettes - should work fine (picture)

Here is a visual look at a Campangolo (left) and Shimano (right) 11 speed cassette. The short story: These two cassettes should be interchangeable giving Campagnolo riders more cassette size options. It could also mean people with wheelsets where there will be no 11 speed Shimano option (like all Zipps) could use the Campagnolo conversion and run a Campangolo cassette with their Shimano 11 speed drivetrain.

    1-PC105073.JPG

Measuring cassettes is hard work Ė the tapered and shaped cogs mean itís hard to find a consistent reference point. Instead I thought a visual comparison would be easier Ė this is taken with the longest lens I have (150mm) to reduce lens curve as much as possible, and is inline with the top two cogs. The two parallels which the cassettes are resting on are not square to the camera because they need to support the 25t Campagnolo cassette cog and the 11t Shimano. Both cassettes are fitted to freehub bodies and torqued to spec to ensure theyíre suitably compressed.

Iíve got a fascination with interchangeability between different brands and models and went so far as to put together a drivetrain calculator website which currently works with 551124 possible combinations, however is a little out of date and needs some time to bring it into the 11 speed era.

Zipp is shipping 11spd Shimano compatible hubs now, no? Not that the 2012 hubs ran 11spd Campy that well to begin with...

You can typically shim the freehub over, and re-dish the wheel but this may be easier for older hubs.

Cool none the less and alot easier than swapping a bunch of junk over!

The 2013 Zipp wheels will have 11 speed freehub bodies. There will be no freehub body conversion for current wheels.

Nice tool. However it is not completely accurate as campy 10sp shifters --> sram 10sp RD --> shimano/sram 10sp chain/cassette works fine while your tool suggest a jtek adapter.

2012 Zipp wheels will be convertible as well. When they made the update to the hubs by moving the bearing out on the non drive side last year, those hubs are the ones. You do need to dish them but they are convertible.

this is great news if the theory to practice works. what it would essentially mean is that we can run any wheels going forward with 11speed. that's a sweet possibility.

this, it is only the old zipp hubs with the carbon dust cap that are SOL at the moment, but a firm in cali is working on a freehub replacement

the name of said firm has slipped my mind however.

Our local Mr Zipp said anything pre-2013 was going to be SOL - this surprised me so hopefully you're correct.

I find it interesting that SRAM torpedoed Shimano's tall-spline 10 speed freehub body but now they're making wheels to fit their 11 speed.

our distros are already showing freehub options for the current (2012) hubs

he might mean "not compatible" by its not a straight plug and play and requires a redish

I have heard of someone who tried the new Shimano RD with 11s campy cassette and it was working fine. I am not sure it is working as well as the campy-campy or shimano-shimano combo. But if it was it would indeed be good news.

tooth profiles will be a bit different so it will never be "as good"

that being said with electronic shifting it really doesnt matter

As of two weeks ago when I spoke with CK, they claim there are no plans for Classic hubs to be 11 speed compatible. R45 only.

Beyond Black and Falcon Grey hubs can be upgraded. Silver hubs can not.

I'm reviving this old thread. About a year has passed -- anyone have hands on experience with Campy cassettes with Shimano 11sp shifters/derailleurs? Good, bad, ugly?
