Default Who makes a badass drool-worthy track bike?

So, if you're a typical V-Salon resident -- i.e., you've got at least one handmade bike built by one of the guys who posts here :) -- and you were going to add a track bike to your stable, where would you be looking?

I'd like to pretend that this question comes from a genuine desire to race the living piss out of said track bike on a local velodrome and not to have it relegated to Hipster Fixie® commuter status...I can't completely make that promise, but that's the ideal.

Mostly I've just become enamored of the absolute simplicity & purity of a track bike: It's what, four moving parts? (Five if you count the chain?) To paraphrase a Chris Farley routine, "that's cool"

Any of the small American framebuilders specialize in this discipline? Any of the Big Companies make a respectable track frame? Do the Japanese artisans really own this market?

Point me towards track pron, please.

    disclaimer: I don't race track.

That said, give me a tigged or filleted, fat-tubed, steel or aluminum, not drilled for brakes, level top tube bike with a nice carbon fork and a campy pista group. carbon is cool too but i'd be way too much of a poser on one of those. i'd love a rock lobster, land shark (though out of the steel business now), don walker, or something similar. some Felts have been catching my eye but I don't know anything about them.

i apologize if i'm stating the obvious, or derailing, but i would make an honest assessment of whether you want to race the bike or not. in all reality, a bad-ass velodrome racing bike with disc wheels and super aero design is not something you really want to ride on the street, and a super nice fixed gear road typed bike is not one you really want to race. anything in between is a compromise of both sides. this is IMO of course. i am a pretty dedicated fixed gear rider, and i've thought about this quite a bit.

either way, i suggest, if you havent already, take a peek at this 48 page thread for some eye candy and ideas, i think my favorites are from WINTER...:

I'm guessing the majority of the customers I've had over ever the years have owned a track bike at some point.
Thusly 'tis interesting to observe that no one has yet ordered one.

Clearly, the most drool worthy track bikes are aluminum as aluminum is the shiniest and shiny is good.

A saronni red colnago super pista would do the trick IMO, but you'd have to stop staring at it for long enough to ride it.

When it comes time to replace my track bike, I'll very likely go with a rock lobster. Paul's support of the juniors here has been top class, and the reward has been some top class performances at junior nats, worlds and beyond. I'd also consider a spectrum, or a don walker.

*I'm pretty sure this was from the day these two and I took a lap in a 12 lap scratch race. Well... they took it. I was hanging on for dear life.

tom kellog has a strong backgound with track, some info on his website, don walker has as well. both already mentioned. Most of the builders who are well versed and have been around for a while can build a nice track bike im sure. The Italian companies, Pinarello, bianchi, cinelli, etc. tend to have some cool stuff, some retro, some hipster, some full modern racer, but then I sell all three of those companies so the warm feelings I have towards them might not be the same for others. If I were going to jump the gun on one, I would probably start with Tom K. I do also have a lust for some of the japenese stuff, especially the older stuff, but that is mostly just for the bike snob in me

No. But they do make some nice bikes. I have a Japanese frame that I rode for a couple years, on both the track and the road as a bitchin' fixie. Selling it now, but only because it never quite fit me right on the track. But it does ride very nice. Replaced it with a basic level Dolan simply because I can't justify the cost of a super nice track bike for my decreasingly frequent trips to the track. Maybe that will change next season. FWIW, Don Walker bikes have always caught my fancy.

Track bikes are first and foremost tools. Tools to go fast around the track. Wrecks don't happen often, but when they do its pretty painful. DAMHIK

I've had a Cunefare and a Denny. Both good builders in SoCal (where there's lots of tracks to race)

Next one's likely to be something like a Tiemeyer, Teschner, or even another Denny.

This is what I did: took my De Rosa and had Mark Nobilette duplicate it, with a front brake. I rode the former exclusively for several years in the early '80's in NYC. Never wanted a brake. But now, with two kids, etc., I can go faster with the brake. This bike is perfect.
Whether this qualifies as badass, I can't say.
