    Default Where is Toronto?

Polls are lame, but would you estimate that most people know where Toronto is?

Listening to an NPR story the other day, a researcher from U of T was being interviewed,
and at the end of the story, one of the hosts made some comment about one of the
statistics, and the other host said, um... you know Toronto isn't in US of A, right?
    Oh, yes, right... that's Canada..
So it got me wondering if we're in the 51st state?
I assume people hear about Toronto on the news, but if you're not from the North East of the US,
what are the chances you could point to within 500 miles of Toronto on a map?

As I cruise the online auction site, I am constantly reminded of the watering down of our education system. Indoctrination over education these last many years. "Ware" for "wear" is the most recent example.

Oh and I can point straight to Toronto. I've driven to Montreal...and I have a good memory eh.

I can find Toronto. YYZ. :thrasher:

While Americans' general lack of geographical knowledge is unacceptable, when I lived in Europe I found their knowledge not much better. Besides knowing where New York and Los Angeles were, and possibly Florida, they had no idea about the rest of the US.

One day in college, I drew a map of the USA for a friend of mine (I'm sure it had something to do with whatever we'd been talking about...) - I sketched out all the states, the Great Lakes, some big rivers...

She was flabbergasted. It was as if I'd just conjured a live dog out of my trousers.

Yeah, I could find Toronto on a map. I gots mad geography skillz (compared to most of my fellow citizens, that is.)

Would the map have a dot on it with the word "Toronto" next to it?

Aboot 350 miles or so southeast of Thunder Bay, eh?

Maybe it's cheating, as I spent a good bit of my childhood in upstate NY and my folks took us to Canada quite a few times. I've got fond memories of driving around Lake Ontario in our Olds Vista Cruiser filled with my dad's Parliament cig smoke. What you have to keep in mind -- and some find this a bigger trick than others -- is that many of us still use "America" as an honorific.

Bunch of show-offs. Everyone knows Toronto is a northern suburb of Detroit.

And what's this about a 51st state? We annexed you during the French and Indian War. Didn't you get the memo?

    You got a live dog???

    oh, as if.

    i was flabbergasted too.:D

Yeah, I might mix up some of the NE detail, but I could get 90% of NA and some of Central and South Americas mapped out basically. Actually have a relief map of the states hanging at home. And I'm a regular google earf user too. watched a bit on the ocean floor last night. Are guys more graphically minded?

Toronto -650 miles from my house. I found it on GE with labels and borders turned off. first guess.

Priceless! Last time I was in Toronto it was for the Messenger World Championships (I think it was 1999). Lovely city---I was with some SF Messengers at the time. They had a wooden indoor track--sweet!

Cool, I think I'll kick it around at the gathering tomorrow.:D

    I gots two for you.

A nice young lady who worked at an international company (oh hell, who am I kidding--my ex) once asked me where the UK was.

This one is BETTER--buddy of mine was chatting it up with a front desk gal in Utah IIRC and the topic of skiing came up. He commented that he'd done some skiing when he lived in Europe--to which she replied, "They have mountains in Europe?"

My wife and I visit Toronto at least once a year...about a five hour drive from Pittsburgh. Good theatre, dining and people. What's the saying..."It's like New York City only run by the Swiss."
