Default Weekend Ride Reports: Let's hear em'

Some crazy warm weather up and down the eastern seaboard hope many were able to take advantage.

Sat. Joined the wife for a club ride. Good pal and former tandem race partner showed up and we had beat each other black and blue...it was good. I was so shattered that I peddaled the last 5 miles in the small ring nursing a bottle of Heed. Ouch. :) Once back to the cars my pal wanted to knock out some more miles so we did an easy 15 until the gals showed up. What a great day, COME ON SPRING TIME.

Sun. Left the house in 40 F weather and finished in 66 F!!! Wow, the local training grounds were littered with groups "in training" hilarious I have not heard so many "biker back" and "SLOWING" since the last AIDS ride!!! Yikes. Besides all the hilarity was able to tag onto a solid team ride until it got ugly. The legs they were not all there so it was back in the small ring. Still got 55 miles nice day yo.

Snuck out yesterday for a bit. It was about 30* but sunny and calm so it felt very good to be out.

Road rides here in February are rare but the roads are clear so why not.

Today I went up to the hill and made some turns. The snow wasn't great but it beats watching TV by a long shot.

    Default Weekend

Saturday was supposed to be warm. Temp. at ride start was a balmy 27 degrees F. It did warm up nicely thereafter and 60 miles went into the log.

Sunday was warmer, wetter and windy. Melting snow, gravel, road salt and a final climb up a dirt (mud) road made a mere 37 miles quite the challange. It's all good.

Just about 80 minutes under a slight drizzle. I knew my time was limited so I headed to some hills in the neighborhoods by the capitol building here in SLC. Shortish and quite steep making for great repeats. It was the second ride back on standard chainrings and I gotta say I really dig the feel of grabbing the 53 and sprinting just for the hell of it. It just feels different, even if I look like a jackass doing it, it feels..faster? The 39 is a different story...

I had a great 3 hour ride yesterday. The temp was about 45 degrees,
and there was melting snowbank water everywhere, so I took the single speed
beater bike. I just couldn't do it to the Kirk!! My commuter beater is now
freakin' covered in dried salt. Nothing smokes a drivetrain quicker than rolling for
    hours in salty water!

Today, colder temps... me chained to the desk at work. But this week looks good.

Saturday no ride as I was coaching my daughter's basketball and indoor soccer teams.

Sunday I did an easy 30 miles as I wanted to go easy on my legs as tomorrow I begin training with my new coach and the schedule is tough.

Solo for 25 mi on Saturday, then out with the Team Lardbutt group (ten of us met at local park at 7:30am) for our typical ride (not quite 50 mi) today - can't ask for nicer weather in February!

As Too Tall said, EVERYONE out on their bikes today - and why not?!?

I live in the same city as Grant and he did the smart thing riding his beater bike. I took out the Hampsten Strada Bianca both yesterday (45F) and today (37F?) and it's covered in salt :(

Still, nice to get out and ride. Hill intervals at the Scarborough Bluffs on Saturday, riding on broken pavement and gravel on a flat, closed course Sunday (Leslie St. Spit). At least the bike had full fenders and a mudflap so that helped.

This was my first weekend this year riding outside.
16 inches of snow in the past 2 weeks gave way to a
couple of 50º+ days. 2 hours each Sat. and Sunday.
Big wind & clouds on Sat. & plenty of slop - fenders worked great.
Calm and sunny today, lots more bike traffic.
It felt great to ride outdoors.
    More to come this week.

I claim no glory but I did ride outside on a road bike for the first time in the modern era (plenty of little errand trips around town, but no real riding). After spending the winter on rollers, everything felt smooth and comfortable. Until I got into some little itty bitty hills. They got my attention far more than they should, even for being as larded out as I am. S'posed to be a nice week, so maybe I'll get out a couple/few more times and blow out some of the carbon. Nice just to get outside and feel GOOD out there. Even if the body don't work.

    Default 2000 Vertical Feet

Did about 2000 vertical feet of DESCENDING behind my 4 year old teaching her how to ski at Okemo in VT. Did the bunny hill a bunch of times snowplowing behind her trying to shield her from the million out of control beginning snowboarders. Legs got a good anaerobic workout though.

As Grant said the snow banks have been melting. I was out today for three hours. it was beautiful heading out, sunny and warm(ish) but a good headwind. It was a few degrees above freezing and the snow banks had been lazily melting and running across some of the twisty westward bike routes. Heading home with a great tailwind the speeds increased and the temperature dropped to the freezing mark. Some of the areas with more water running across crunched as I pushed through newly forming ice. I felt my front tire slip a little around a few corners and thought I should take it easy.
    It got me.
Looking for the next exit off the path I came into a corner gingerly and hit a thin layer of ice. I slid to the outside but controlled it only to hit another icy patch as I came back around. I knew I was going down and tried rolling into it as much as I could. The last thing I herd was the sound my chin bouncing off of the pathway.
Be careful out there, spring isn't here yet.
noah, with no road rash to speak of.
