Default Transition from one to two bottle mounts?

Was going to go for a ride today on a "vintage" race bike and I remember it's going to be fruckin 100 degree out there and the bike only has one bottle mount. So just out of curiosity I ask, when did 2 mounts become the standard and is there anything more to it other than just commons sense? Oh and I did carry a spare in my back pocket.

it was in the 80s when, at large, the industry took notice of the the new-ish tri market.
head tube pump pegs are also on the same timeline.
the reasoning is that tri-ers have to do all their own service and feeds.
typically, race (as in bicycle racing) bicycles were used in events where feeds, wheel pits, and service cars were the norm atmo.

    How was the ride? :)

I recall it being around 85 or 86 when most Italian
brands added the second set of mounts. It pissed
me off to no end, my 83 vintage bike being so
inadequate with only a single set :(

84-86 some time for all the manufacturers to have 2 bottle mounts on pro only and consumer pro bikes. Up until 85 most pro only bikes only had one bottle holder as lager stage races had water support motos ( sponsored by Coke)

in the early '70s, most bikes had no water bottle mounts, it was assumed you would use clamps. By the late 70's, most high-end bikes had a single water bottle mount on the down tube.

On long rides, I would often use a handlebar cage. Not sure if I ever raced with it.

This was from '83 iirc. It's almost worth giving up the second water bottle mount to have a frame pump painted to match like that. I believe that the handlebar tape is period correct, too.

I think it was, as the Germans say, Klosterfokken. Tim O'Donnell

you can get them, although I've never seen a double cage in the flesh. I have one on my commuter that I use to hold my coffee or my lock. For whatever reason they aren't as nice as the old TA cages.

When I lived in Utah, it would often be 5 bottle weather. Two in the pockets and 3 in cages. The old smaller TA bottles are really nice for pockets.

Extremely unfashionable, yet if temperatures demand LOTS of water, just use your mountainbiking CamelBak with a large chunk of ice frozen in the bladder.

I think the camelbak is better fashion than having 5 bottles on the bike...

It's also worth planning the route around 711 stops.

Velo Orange has a clamp adapter that will let you use a cage on the bar. Never seen one in real life though...but interested if anyone has...

The TA handlebar mount cages turn up occasionally on ebay.
You may want to bend the front loop in a bit to prevent the bottle jumping out on rough roads, as mine did twice last year at l'Eroica.

As well as the reasons explained above by e-richie, I think there were some lingering superstitions about hydration that were not properly exorcised until the 80s. One of the old geezers I occasionally ride with used to run with Arthur Lydiard's crew in the early 60s, and to this day he insists that drinking too much "makes you weak"
