I used to love that rear derailleur with the simplex shifters...

Thanks so much for posting this.

It's a SLJ, but I need to either get a long cage version or put a smaller range freewheel. The short cage doesn't work with the 48/32 cranks and the 13-28 freewheel. Anyone have a 12-24 DA freewheel?

Keith, it's deep red Fizik tape.

Thanks all for the kind words- the nicest thing about the experience was I gave Steve my dimensions, told him what parts I was going to be using, and then just got out of the way. Other than harassing Martin for build pics I think I was as reasonable a customer as I could be.

i’ll say that michael’s bike is as good an example as any of what we here at tournesol - douglas, martin, and i - are trying to do: simple lines, good construction/fit/geometry, and a bike that works as well with old parts as with new. when i look at michael’s pictures i don’t think “oh, that’s a beautiful frame” or “i wonder why he...?” - i simply see a bicycle that uses older parts and looks very good as a whole. the details of the frame don’t jump out at me and demand my attention, none of michael’s parts are incongruous in relation to the others, and i can’t think of anything i would add or take away as an improvement. in short, to me at least, it looks correct.

michael, pump is being mailed today, decaleur soonish. scotty, please put me on the long list for a set of your shift levers if you could.

Lovely bike. Nice call on the bar tape color. Everything just hangs together. The whole exceeds the sum of the parts. Here's to many happy miles.

A little short for you :)
Dag, you're right, just a smidge too small. One of these days, I'm getting rid of a vertebrae so more bikes will fit me.

Very nice. Thanks for posting the pics Michael. Hampco, don't sell yourselves short on the details. It seems to me that it is the details (rear brake cable hanger, contrasting paint on fork crown, rear light braze-on, etc....) that make the whole go together so smoothly.

That is just an awesome looking bike. Congrats, I know you have been wanting something like that for a while and by the looks of it, you did well, real well.

Just as an aside, did it cost enough to qualify as "green"?:)

Since I couldn't convince you to sell me the bike you met your wife on, I had to do something...

I do know it cost some green, but I'm pretty sure Steve shipped it via pony express. At least that's what it seemed like between the initial email from FedEx until the delivery. That's probably green... :)

I see anamoly has already responded to you below about the freewheel.

Please let me know if that does not work out.

I quite literally have two (2) boxes of freewheels, most unused, ranging from 5 to 8 speed, sitting in the garage.

I even have 3 of those Regina CX freewheel kits - the mixy- matchy build your own ones.

So if you still need one, let me know.

Is that a custom front rack too? Or is it an off the shelf rack?

Perfect proportions, beautiful color. Hampsten's bikes always look right and your build really does the rig justice.

That's lovely. Do you have photos up on flickr? I'd love to see hi-rez versions.

Question: what's your commuting load going to be, and how will you carry it?
