  3. I'm a huge fan and not a frame gets built that doesn't have a bit of Tom in the background.

Tom's on the "dinner party list".

Huge fan. He just played near here in Tulsa. There is a new book out about him too that is really good. If you like jazz piano and the troubador type, check out his early stuff. If you like really eclectic stuff the later stuff will take you there. If you want to imagine someone's slow descent into psychosis (I don't think he is though) get it all and listen to it sequentially.

Love the guy. I like his early stuff and like his late stuff, but LOVE 'Rain Dogs', the perfect melding of his styles into a nearly perfect album. I buy a new one every now and then and it never lives up to that one. So far, anyway.

I have a bit of him from itunes. Love it! DOG DOOR!
He paints very vivid pictures with his words and music. Neat little stories...
Saw him on Letterman. Tom is very smart and funny!:adore:

    lucky dude

he played in oregon over 10 years ago and it sold out instantly

  10. I've never been excited about the guy. I don't "get it." Maybe someone can explain it to me. I guess I understand the line between mad and sane. Captain Beefheart and Zappa are in this camp too, although I think I get them a bit more.

Tom Waits rules---many of your favorite songs...(even pop) were written by this guy! Think Springstein---Jersey Girl, even Closing Time was made popular by someone else, Old 55 (Eagles). I've seen him live and his performances are so personal that you feel like it's just you, Tom, some crazy musical combo of interesting instruments in a dive bar. I like his older stuff best---but he is a classic. One of my fav's.

  12. He never did like that little dog.

never could stand that dog. And! you have to include the grunt in front of it. I agree that his later stuff is rough, unless you know him from before, then I think it makes a litte more sense. Rain Dogs is the halftime show between his early stuff and the descent into madness. No matter the sound, the lyrics always grab me. Come on up to the House is one of the best sermons I have ever heard and it basically says it all. I love the whole Blue Valentine album, and Walking Spanish Down the Hall is chilling everytime I hear it.

If you haven't seen the clip with him and Iggy Pop from Coffee and Cigarettes, you gotta see that too.

  14. See, that's why I'm not a songwriter. Or a poet.

Heart Attack & Vine, Closing Time, Heart of Saturday Night. Love it. I am not familiar with the stuff after Rain Dogs.

    Genius. Huge influence, just awesome.

  17. sitting in bend. the ipod on shuffle just hit christmas card from a hooker.

nobody mentioned the sound track from one from the heart, a great francis ford coppola film set in las vegas but shot on a big set. it stars nastasia kinski. simple love story. a great film. the soundtrack is part of the story. tom wrote all the songs which he performs with crystal gayle. great stuff. the guy is unique and a genius.

fixed, i'll say it again, you lucky dude.

  18. Going to Atlanta tomorrow

To see Tom Waits perform at the Fox Theatre. Kind of crazy to spend two days but he hasn't played anywhere near NY for a long time. I am really lookng forward to it! My wife, not so much, but she is a trooper! My music taste is all over the place but he is by far my favorite!

Frank hung his wild years on a nail through his wife's forehead.

The gypsies are tragic and if you want to buy perfume, well they'll bark you down like carnies sell you Christmas cards in June.

She's a moving violation from her conk down to her shoes, but it's just an invitation to the blues.

Charlie I think about you, everytime I pass a filling station, on account of all the grease you used to wear in your hair.

  20. Ok I'll mention one from the heart

I still need to see the movie

    Broken bicycles,
    Old busted chains,
    With busted handle bars
    Out in the rain.
    Somebody must
    Have an orphanage for
    All these things that nobody
    Wants any more
    September's reminding July
It's time to be saying good-bye.

    Summer is gone,
    Our love will remain.
    Like old broken bicycles
    Out in the rain.

    Broken Bicycles,
    Don't tell my folks;
    There's all those playing cards
    Pinned to the spokes,
    Laid down like skeletons
    out on the lawn.
    The wheels won't turn
    When the other has gone.
The seasons can turn on a dime,
    Somehow I forget every time;
For all the things that you've given me
    Will always stay
Broken, but I'll never throw them away
