Default Time for some new tubular wheels

Commuting is destroying my wheels! I wipe out one set of wheels every yr. or two...it adds up! Seems like only yesterday I sent a nice old set of DA hubs to Dave Thomas and he laced up some super strong Velocity Escapes...nice freakin' wheels. The rear is toast, long gone. Time to resupply!!!

    How about this?:

    AMBROSIO Nemesis Tubular Rim
A classic box-style tubular rim, durable and very lively. Silk-Dur shot
peened finish for improved fatigue resistance. One of the most durable
tubular rims on the market.

I've got lots of DA hubs, time to build. These will be 2X front and std. 3X rear. I'll switch to Veloflex Roubaix (edited Pave's woops did not mean to say) this season, thanks for the nudge Mr. Musgrave :)

What's in the works for yourselves? Don't fear tubulars, they love you back ;)

The Ambrosio Nemesis would be good....but it is best to be able to check them out in person, as some of them seem to have a rather bumpy seam (bad braking surface).
I really like the Mavic Reflex...If it were harder to get, people would say nicer things about it.

Got one set of SSC-PR with DT240 built by JY coming.
Building Ambrosio Nemesis 32 laced with supercomp standard 2/3 f/r with DAs shortly.

First set with challenges, second with Sprinters.

Love tubulars, back to them after 20 years... thanks to and inspired by TT

Everyday wheels are DA 9 speed with Mavic GL330's 3X with DT spokes and Veloflex Servizio Corse - what a great set of wheels.

For the new ride Ergott just built me a pair of Velocity Escapes on White Ind. hubs - not exactly sure of the spokage, but they should be here shortly. Looking forward to the ride on those!

So, let's take this question and modify it slightly. I've never used Tubulars, but I do have a wheelset I rebiult recently from an OLD set of Campy/Mavic wheels that a customer gave me years ago. Relaced the rear and threw on some orange Club tires I picked up for about $10 when a local shop closed the doors a few years ago. Using them to build a commuter right now which will have to use a 6 or 7 speed freewheel.

I'd like to upgrade my Atlanta (or perhaps the club racer I'm going to try to build this winter) with tubulars. However, I need to do it on a budget as we have kiddo #4 on the way in January. My needs would be for some commuting and just general riding, no racing. I am a big guy, however and would like to find a nice, strong rim that is not overly heavy. Current weight is about 280, but that is dropping and I ride pretty light on the wheels. Clincher set right now is a set of Matrix ISO 3s on Ultegra hubs. The Matrix are stout, but definitely heavy and not the nicest riding wheels.

So, what sort of recomendations would you guys have?

    Thanks!

Giff, you are made for what I've got for general-all-purpose-last-until-the-crickets-last-chirp wheels!!! I used a set of old DA hubs laced to 32 count Velocity Pro (AKA DeepV) tubular rims using 14 guage butted spokes....brother those wheels are straight and true :) Stay in touch, I might sell them once I finish my new wheels.

I got a set of Nemesis that I wouldn't trade for the world. Jerk gives good Nemesis + Campagnolo hubs.

    Hey Big Boy,

The pave's are clinchers. You might mean carbon's. I love both.

I'm building up a similar pair with King Hubs for cross season.

I've built multiple sets of grey chorus hubs and nos gp4 for cross, some 32 some 36. i'll do a gluing session in the next 4-6 weeks, hopefully after getting my hands on a few of the new rumored extra long nobbied challenge mud specials. Anyone have the latest on these bad boys?

But J, have you had your head checked lately--commuting on veloflex? Most folks just commute on clinchers!

The world could end tommorrow and there I am standing in judgement....you know g-d rides tubulars, yo.

32 spokes per? That should serve you well. The veloflex roubaix are nice darn tires for a 24, IMO.

Nothing's really in the works here in terms of building anything up. I have old nucleon tubulars for cross, with some eurus clinchers for back-up, and I'm pondering switching my cheapie deep section carbons (vuelta) over to cross tires. There's another set of nucleon's for the road, and daily, I'm riding a set of Ksyrium SL tubulars that I picked up cheap on close-out last year -- they seem strong and fine. Also, I picked up some used 303s on the other forum. They look to be in really good shape coming out of the box -- probably glue up some tires this weekend (maybe the stehers that arrived yesterday). I also have a set of Reynolds KOMs sitting around (ok, so maybe I do have a problem), but I think I might just sell them.

    Default Ambrosio Crono F20

I am in the process of putting together a set of tubulars built with Ambrosio Crono F20 32 hole rims, 2008 Campy Record hubs and Sapim CX Ray spokes. I can't decide on whether to go radial on front with radial non-drive on rear with 2x on drive or just go with 3x all the way around. I am about 155 lbs. This summer I have been riding Bontrager Race X Lite wheels which I had on a cross bike and mounted them with Veloflex carbons. I love the ride of the Carbons and now am converted to the tubulars and need a dedicated set of tubular wheels for the road bike. The Veloflex Carbons smooth out the cracks, frost heaves, pothole patches of the Chicago suburban roads but at the same time retain a great road feel. I'm sure you all know that but it was a revelation to me since I only rode cheap tubulars in the past. By the way, has anyone heard of or have experience with a wheel builder named Tom Rakowski (Hammerpilot) in Austin Texas?

All the cool people commute on tubulars. You have to be extra cool to commute on Veloflex Roubaix, though.
