    Default Steel frame manufacturers

    Hi,

I'm looking for a new frameset. After a lot of searching and looking around i'm pretty sure it will be a steel frameset.
Now, i'm not all that familiar with the different techniques, tubesets and manufacturers of steel frames (i know the big names, but i know for sure you guys can give me some other names of great builders).
Also, what is the difference between TIG and fillet welding? From what i see most builders do TIG welding...

    Thanks

i suggest that you travel to the smoked out section and look at some of the stuff there.
it will be a good introduction to many builder who congregate here and could make you a great frame.

decide what you would like the frame to do and see what you come up with.
ill leave the tig/ fillet question for the guy who builds the frame. both/ either can make a respectable bike frame.

good luck. the voyage is a part of this process.

Carl Strong has a good webpage on choosing a framebuilder that includes a short discussion of different building techniques: Strong Frames | More Stuff | How to choose a small custom Framebuilder I found it worth a read when I was getting ready to order a steel frame.

Better advice than this you won't get. The VSalon is where I found the guy who built one of the best steel frames I've in the last 30 years.

Steve, how can you be so nice, when earlier today you left some poor guy on the side of the road with his chain off and bike upside down? You are a very complex person.

    You are in Belgium?
No good steel builders over there? Tons of steel builders in the UK-
What will you use the bike for?
What is your time frame? (how long can/will you wait)
    What is your budget?
Do you want something fancy or more of a tool/weapon?
These questions can narrow your search

Yes, I live in Belgium. There is only one builder around (as far as i know) and that is Duell. But he doesn't realy has what i'm looking for.
I wan't a bike that can resist A LOT of training kilometres and just 1 or 2 crits a year and some Cyclosportives. I'm a tiny guy (172cm/ 5,56feet , 56kg/123lbs). So i'm not a powerfull sprinter, though i can hammer quite hard on the pedals.
So, it doesn't has to be a show-bike. I'm rather looking for a more traditional looking frame, but with a modern touch (so no lugs or extremely small diametered tubesets).
The bike will be finished with Sram groupo, handbuild wheels (chris king hubs and kinlin rims) and a Deda or Syntace cockpit).
About the time frame, i can wait for about a year, but definitely no longer than that.

What builders do you know in the UK boots2000?

    Welcome to the forum, Stockie.

TIG welding uses an electric arc that melts the two parent metals together. Filler wire of similar composition is added to the molten puddle to restore the wall thickness.

Fillet brazing does not melt the tubes. Typically an oxy/acetylene torch is used to heat the tubes to brazing temperature. A bronze or silver filler material is then melted and flowed into the joint. The builder can choose the size of the fillet on the outside of the joint.
