stack height

i'm talking about the frame's stack height vertically from horizontal tt to bb
it seems to pop up on some stock geometry sheets, but not on others. i suppose i could see how it'd be helpful.
how importantly do the framebuilders regard this measurement?

That's not "stack height". Stack height is generally the amount of "stack" that a headset adds to your frame, when installed. Unless I'm missing something in your post.

Not that I know anything about anything but I've never seen that before I could guess and say that it may there just to show a comparison between a level TT bike and a sloper. Cervelo is pretty good at marketing strategy and may have found it an oft asked question from the havent rode in twenty years crowd.

I think it came about as a way to let people know how high the head tube is relative to the BB. If you're concerned about head tube length cause you can't handle much bar drop it helps you. At least that's what I think.

Dan Empfield of slowtwitch.com came up with (or maybe just popularized) stack/reach as a standardized comparison of tri bike geometries, and maintains a Stack & Reach Database

I haven't seen it used much elsewhere.

I use it often in determining if fit coordinates can be applied to a particular frame. It's quick and takes seat tube angle out of the equation. For stock frames that is.

Here is one of Empfield's earlier articles from '03 where he explains his use of the terms, which Cervelo uses. Not sure if he was the first to use the terms that way or not. I have seen other uses of the terms "stack" and "reach," such as GrantM does in this wiki thread. I think that the term "reach" is more frequently used to describe the distance from the saddle to the handlebars, so the use of the same term can be a but confusing.
