Wait, you only want a $100 for that?

I propose an even better idea... Give it to the fastest kid with the worst bike you know, and we all take up a pot to send you $100. Someone on Farm Team or CRCA must need a better frame, and that, right there, is a damn good frame.

    I'm in for $50

Actually, what I really wanted to do was put a bike together for IChallengemyself. It's a local organization that does wonderful things for kids here in NYC. http://www.ichallengemyself.org/HOME.asp

If you guys want to help out putting together a bike by donating parts, nothing fancy just solid gear, I'd be happy to assemble it and bring it up to Ana, who runs the organization.

Last year did a charity ride with George Hincapie that was organized by one of the local teams here (NYVelocity), the proceeds of which went to that organization. Tons of fun. I've donated a few things since, which is very gratifying. Very worthy cause.

    Whaddaya think of that idea?

the junior rider development program for the CRCA is handled by ken harris. it might not be a bad idea to donate it to him and he could take care of seeing that a needy junior gets it. all of us here would chip in and donate some money to you for the cause.

    http://www.crca.net/about/contacts/

btw- ken is a solid racer. he set the WR for the hour in the 40+ age group at TTown last year.

Guys I just traded email with Ken at CRCA and he mentioned they're ok with junior rider development bike this year. The latest recipient is killing it too--I looked up his name and he just won the state 16-18 road champs, so good on him!

Anyway, he suggested IChallengemyself would be a good cause, so how 'bout we try & assemble a bike?

    I can kick in:
    frame
    seat
    seatpost clamp

    Flux offered tires & tubes.

EDS offered a 9 speed group, which is great! (EDS: can you list what parts you have available in the group?)

Looks like all that's left is:
    headset
    seat post (27.2)
    handlebar
    stem (for 1 1/8" steerer)
    wheels
    bar tape
    cables/housing

I can handle the build other than headset (I don't have those tools), and I'll take it down to a local shop to have that done.

I've got a Ritchey WCS stem (a 120mm if I recall correctly) to contribute if needed.

    Update:

I can add wheels to the mix. Was going to sell a set I had, they were cheap but sturdy training wheels from Neuvation. The buyer hadn't picked up yet and I asked him this afternoon if he was okay that I didn't sell 'em, and he was, so presto, we got wheels.

    I can kick in:
    frame & fork
    seat
    seatpost clamp
    wheels

    Flux offered tires & tubes.

EDS offered a 9 speed group, which is great! (EDS: can you list what parts you have available in the group?)

    That leaves:
    headset
    seat post (27.2)
    handlebar (jscottyk or suspectdevice)
stem (for 1 1/8" steerer) (jscottyk or suspectdevice)
    bar tape
    cables/housing
    water bottle cage(s)
pedals & cleats if possible (sorry, I forgot to add these previously)

This is cool stuff, we're getting there!

I have shifters, brakes, crank/bottom bracket, front and rear derailleurs and probably a cassette (12-25). Again, all of this is well used 9 speed Shimano 105, but all functionable. I can probably dig out some other random parts if need be.

I have this near mint 600 gruppo: Shimano '600' 8-speed gruppo, nice condition: $120

Was gonna build a rando-type bike out of it, but I think getting a kid on a bike is a much better thing to do with it.

Don't mean to trump you EDS as your offer is awesome, but this group needs only cables to rock.

Y'all let me know whatcha wanna do.

I know you said you already had a saddle, but I have the brand new stock saddle that came on my 2008 cervelo RS (selle san marco ponza) which is too narrow for this girl's butt, but I bet would fit a boy and is light enough to race on, if you think it's better than the one you have. I also have a pack of black gel bar tape that I am happy to donate. SO, if you can use either or both send me a PM as to where to mail it.

I think this is a great project!

FYI, another worthy organization to support when empyting out your spare parts bin is Bike Not Bombs in Boston. They teach inner city kids how to build their own bikes from donated stuff, and at the end they get to keep (and ride) the bike they build. They also need volunteers if any of you live in the area. We stayed with a family in JP recently, and the boy was participating in the program but said the build was slow since they didn't have a lot of teachers there to help them.

I've got an older Fizik Aliante that I'm tossing in since a Salon meber just sold me his lightly used one, so I think we're ok with saddles. But if you want to send it, I'm sure they could use it. Or, donate it to the charity you mentioned in Boston.

Will put you down for the bar tape though! Thanks!

Hold on to everything in the interim until I can confirm to all that we've got everything good to go, and I'll PM you & others the mailing info.

Thanks a ton! This has been great, haven't had this much fun in a long time, way better than my day job...

I've got an idea. Maybe those of you that have shops and can get stuff at wholesale, would be willing to take donations for stuff you'd let go at cost, so maybe folks that don't have the parts that are still needed but want to help could contribute what they can towards the remaining items.
