    Default Oswald Cycles

Are you guys familiar with Tom Oswald? He's a newer custom framebuilder that uses no power tools, and seems like a nice fella. I'm building up one of his 29ers at present. Check out what he uses for his finish work! Pretty cool stuff.

Here is the original thread of interest from 06, from another friendly place:

Tom lives in a wonderful part of the country....not far from "The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania". High quality of life in many ways, excellent riding when the roads are clear! If I still lived in that part of rural PA, I'd explore getting a bike from him.

He has a handful of YouTube videos that are pretty interesting, too.

Yeah, has a little shop in Mansfield, PA. VERY small town with a state University. But only a half hour or so from Wellsboro, which is one of the prettiest little towns you'll find anywhere and very close to the previously mentioned Grand Canyon of PA. Did some touring in that area a few years back - very nice riding.

But Oswald's not a NEW builder - I remember he was around when I first started getting interested more than ten years ago and I think he'd been around for quite a while at that point too. Pretty well established, just a small operation.

I'm not a member of MTBR. Can someone post some pictures? I'm intrigued.

    Like hampsters are picky eaters.

Tom's videos are great. The music really sets them off. Do some more vids Tom!

Tom's workplace on Main Street was the Ben Franklin (before it moved 50 feet north) when I was growing up, if I recall correctly. Great part of the state, nice hills (they seem bigger in my memory), odiferous dairy farms, lots of deer etc. to dodge, crummy shoulders on the roads. Mansfield is a sleepy little town where I did a ton of riding as a kid; not a lot of other distractions. Yes, Wellsboro is a nice, pretty town, but their scholastic sports teams suck (sorry old rivalries die hard). There is a long converted rails to trails path that runs through some gorgeous country close to the Grand Canyon.

I've seen Tom's bikes through his front window on my last visit and we've traded e-mails about riding in the area. Seems like a great guy with an interesting twist on made by hand.

Paging Richard Gere and co. . . or were those gerbils?

Didn't mean to imply Oswald was new at this--kinda like the "new" band that's been slaving away eating beans and sleeping on crusty couches for 11 years. "New" to my razor-sharp awareness.

The late Dr. Cotcamp and I both bought Oswalds about ten years back now. (We often went in on projects together, sometimes to support a nascent builder.) Beautifully made, thoughtfully designed. As I recall they were 'cross bikes and we both raced them happily, in Dennis's case successfully. I'd go back to Oswald in a heartbeat and I'm happy to hear about Justin's 29er. I'll look for photos. Somewhere I'm bound to have them.
