OH thank heaven Rocket 7 is back in business

Guess what? R7 is back. I'm stoked and have been in conversations with them this past week. The downside of my history with UltraCycling which left me with neuropathies in both feet. Thanks to custom road shoes I'm able to ride pain free however this yr. I did much training for CX and 6 races which was enough to make my feet cry uncle. I've got a very old set of broken down R7s that served me well but they are dead fred. The fact that these cats are back in the business is something to note because they really do make great shoes.

I'll document the process here and, GREAT NEWS, Rocket 7 just signed on at Vsalon so we will have some attention from the makers.

Down in my neck of the woods now. I've never really considered custom shoes...but, then again, there was a time I never really considered a custom frame. Looking forward to following along as you go through the process.

A few yrs. back I did castings for LUST and R7 for clients and myself. R7 agreed to let me do castings for myself so I'll take pics. I *think they are going to send fiberglass socks but I'm pretty good with plaster and will ask if it is ok for me to use that.

They are wicked light.

Do they still have the old molds? Meaning can a cat with previous product have new units produced without the casting procedure?

I got 7 seasons out of my original pair, thought I did pretty well considering how light they were. Good product!

do they only do custom? or so they have some "stock" footbeds too.

i'm an on-road guy most of the time, but i need a good shoe for the cx/dirt road bike. i've got some cheap sidis that are just falling apart and it might be time to upgrade, but i dont need custom, always been foot happy in "normal" stuff.

How timely! I've had my pair since 2005, and it remains one of the best investments. I was a long-time Sidi user prior to R7's, and used to have pain in my toes. The semi-custom option (foam box impression only) fixed that. After 8 years, it's only just starting to show wear in one spot because I now use orthotics.

That's correct, we are so happy to be back in business! Same high quality product and we do have some existing molds from past customers but everyone's feet may change over the years so some molds may need to be redone.

Timely thread. I've got some 2009 Specialized Pro Road shoes that feel like home, but are falling apart. I've got through many, many other shoes trying to replicate fit. No luck. Frustrating.

I loved, loved, loved my Rocket 7s. Great product and support. I had two pairs from 2003-2007.

Custom shoes are a useless poser statement if you have normal feet. But if you have shitmutant feet (and Ned has seen mine, he'll back me up on this), custom shoes and footbeds are a necessity.

I've been loyal to D2 since 2009 -- I went with D2 because R7 was MIA. Now that R7 is back in business, it's going to be a tough call when I need some new shoes.

If you are fortunate to have feet that fit comfortably in most shoes then this can sound crazy. After you have gone to every shop in your city and tried on every brand of shoe you can then it starts sounding less crazy. One day I'll be able to buy some custom shoes and I think that will be a very happy day. Til then I will keep cramming my feet in stock shoes.

We do make "stock" models but now we call them "standard". These are for people who know their sizing and we are close to Sidi and don't need any special attention to their feet.

When Rocket7 was in business a few years back, there was also a stock line where Rocket7 was pumping out a lot of shoes. We then started to find them on the internet and people weren't holding their pricing and blowing them out. This is not what any company wants and policing the internet can be a full time job insuring your product is staying at the highest quality. So now we make all of our shoes one at a time and if you don't know your exact sizing, we do tracings and measurements to insure that your shoe will fit. So yes, we do have stock shoes in white.
