I like the Mosson a lot. I think I don't like the color in principle, but I guess I'd have to see it. Also, I wonder what kind of gearing is that, but I like the bicycle. I'd switch the Brooks saddle.

I like the Civia too, except for the mountain bike bars. Mountain bike bars are for mbs, in any other use they are uncomfortable and fugly.

I guess I grew up when Hercules and Raleigh "street bikes" were commonplace and we'd strip then down to race them. First change would be the rear sprocket which was an 18 from the factory and would quickly be switched for a 16 or smaller if we could find one.

OK, nobody has cried foul yet. Here is the real deal. Japanese have produced and still do make some of the most considerate off the shelf bikes anywhere.

Depends on what you mean by urban.

Utilitarian and not-sexy enough to be off the theft radar?

Speedy long lasting tank that might be able to be set up like a proper road bike?

Going to a bar in DUMBO?

Gotta carry 3 full copy boxes on a rush?

Either way, I still say if you mean no shifty bits, buy a steamroller frame (as opposed to the whole bike that surly sells), put some nice wheels on it, buy a good strong set of cranks that gives you a good chainline, and kit out the rest of it with stuff you have lying around the house. A pake will also do. I've unscientifically found that surly owners don't get rid of their bikes as often as Pake owners. I've had my steamroller for like 60K urban miles, and swear by it.

And yes, by all accounts, buy that panasonic and let me test ride it for you. It should take about 5 years of riding to test though, I warn you.

    Default robin hood

I like my 1962 sturmey archer, Robin Hood. Remind me to put some oil on the chain next year.

    Cheers,

I'd kill for a bike that could hold 1-3 wheel boxes (28X28X7). I was thinking about two holders like rear panniers. I'd need some sort of longer wheelbase so I could pedal though.

There's a lot to like about the Trek Portland, but...

What's the deal with those stupid fenders? I live with RaceBlade SKS fenders because I decided to put fenders on a bike without eyelets - They're better than nothing, but nowhere near as useful or substantial as full fenders. These stock fenders look flimsy and almost useless.
    GO!

    That name instantly summons this:

...I like the Raleigh One Way the most so far:

...although that Civia Hyland is really cool hig-zoot solution, especially in this shade:
