Default H+Son TB14 rims available yet? Experiences?

I want to build up a set of retro-look clinchers around a set of Mavic 571/2 hubs that I've been saving, and the H+Son TB14 rims look like they would fit the bill.

Availability was supposed to be February, has anyone gotten their hands on a set, and if so, how do they build up? I'd probably run them with 24mm Challenge Triathlons or 27mm Challenge Parigi-Roubaix tires.

    Thanks,

    Pete

It looks like they are available from Alex's in Japan. I hope there is a grey pair left when I'm ready for them. I think they will be very popular.

They look cool, but how are they are they substantively better than the Sun CR18? They're heavier and will undoubtedly be more expensive. My CR18s haven't needed to be trued once and I'm starting to wear out the sidewalls.

I don't think they have hit distribution channels yet. I had a prototype set, they are rad. I can't wait to get my hard anodized set.

    Anomaly,
What makes them great other than looks? They're pretty heavy.

They are 50-60 grams lighter than CR18s, welded and sleeved versus pinned and of course they DO look better.

they're also 23mm wide, iirc, so will likely have similar performance/handling/cornering abilities to the much vaunted a23s and hed belgiums.

I know specs can be wrong, but these say they're 490 grams and CR18s are 485 grams. I'm with you on the better looking, but CR18s are CHEAP, 22.5 mm wide, and bombproof.

Every CR18 I've ever seen weighed has been 530+ grams with most weighing in the 550g range.

I'm not a fan of CR-18's at all. DT > Mavic > pretty much everything else

Kinlin and Velocity rims are usually excellent rims as well. Mavic is overpriced for what you get these days. Their QC isn't what it used to be.

    Personally I go:
    HED/DT
    Kinlin/Velocity
    Mavic

I'm commenting on overall quality, not individual features of each rim.

I recently built up a CR18 and while it's a great value for the price, it's incomparable to the TB14, or rather the prototype that I have, in terms of quality. The CR18 is rarely completely straight and the pinned joint is not-so-great. Some folks have difficulty getting a 23c tire to seat on them. Presumably, the production version of the TB14 will have none of these issues.

Any idea of price once they are available in the US?
Love my HED C2's but my next wheelset was likely going to be A23's to save a bit o cash. These (aesthetically) look nicer.

I imagine it'll be several months before they're available through QBP, but in the interim, I 'spect you can order 'em direct from the web site. That's been the case with the other products. Given the characteristics of this rim, I also speculate that it won't be cheap. It won't be hard to beat the price and availability of the HED C2, but this rim is extruded from G609, is welded, machined, double-eyeletted, and hard-anodized.

I've got a couple hundred miles on them.
I love them; the hard ano is holding up well, they build up well.
Currently running old Michelin Axial Pro 25s that measure out to 28s on these rims. great ride

I got a set of these, 28 hole in the hard anodized finish. Laced 'em up to a set of refurbished Ultegra 6400 hubs (should be good for another 50,000km or so).
I'd say the overall quality of the rims is on par with Mavic of the 90s. Much nicer finish on the join and around the spoke and valve holes than the Velocity rims on my other set of handbuilts.

The ride is exactly what you'd expect of a 23mm wide, non-aero rim. Solid, predictable, bombproof.

I built a pair of the hard-ano a couple of weeks ago. The customer supplied them and I don't know what channel they came through. At 23mm wide and 511 / 512 grams they're pretty porky and I didn't find them easy to build which was a real surprise because they looked like an extremely well-made rim.

Certainly a cool product and I'm sure some people will crave them, but if function is your #1 then I'd choose something else.
