Thread: Fifo

  1. Fifo

So, I keep having to retreat to my internal happy place on my commute and feel the need to rant just a little. It seems the default queuing strategy employed by most of my fellow commuters and the occasional pathlete is LIFO when encountering an intersection along the trails, while I believe FIFO is only decent way to coexist harmoniously. Hell, I even honor the FIFO queue when it's an older couple out for a walk or a group of moms with strollers. 90% of the time, I need to wait for an opportunity to pass the jackass(es) that just leapfrogged in front of me. Would it be wrong to shove them into the weeds as I pass?

I believe the default queuing strategy that needs to be implemented today on multi-user trails is that known as First In First Out, commonly known as FIFO, pronounced "phee pho". In my personal and professional opinion, the implementation of this queuing strategy could help reduce commuting times across the world, as well as provide a significant reduction in the amount of MUTSA (multi-user-trail-systems-aggravation).

My opinion is that if you feel that other folks on the MUT are moving too slowly, then move to road. I occasionally ride along the Burke-Gilman Trail in Seattle as part of my commute and ride there with my kids. I keep a nice and safe slow speed and do not worry about what the other morons are doing unless they are endangering myself or my family. Otherwise 99% of my riding on on roads. I will occasionally suggest to the pseudoracers on the B-G that they ought to ride on the roads if they are ridedangerously fast for the conditions. They probably don't appreciate it.

I use the FIFO approach and pass cautiously and with warning when needed.

John M, I am with you. I use the trails for commuting, getting out of town to ride and taking my kids for a ride. The trails are used with respect for others. The rant is about etiquette which seems to be in short supply.

BTW, thanks for the White & Nerdy link. I am, indeed, whiter than sour cream.

You are not alone. Bike Snob vented about this annoying behavior, which he named "shoaling." Linky.

Yes, yes, geeks are frowned upon, and computer geeks are the worst of the bunch, but I can't help it:

I may be wrong, but I could swear that back in my college programming classes (one of which was taught by none other than John Kemeny) we pronounced "FI" the same way we pronounced "Chi" (as in "Delta Tau Chi").

    FIFO rhymes with piedough.

Perhaps you can borrow the chalkbot from Paul and Phil now that the Tour is over and have it crap out this webpage on those LIFO'ing mf'ers:

    What is FIFO?

In my travails on the trails around DC, many of which cannot be just vacated to the road for those who think it can be done, I have found that having mounted one of those small "Incredibells" onto the handlebar makes all the difference in the world. A quick ding and everyone's happy. Doesn't solve every problem of the trail, but it's a lot better than running silent. You can't escape some path usage in northern VA, at least I have never found a way.

I don't know of any etiquette on the trails other than to be safe and polite. If someone tried to push me into the grass they would be in for quite a surprise in that I can take a lot more pushing than most people think and I can do the Renshaw headbutt if needed.

Saab, I'm talking about when coming to an intersection with a red light (on the W&OD portion of my commute) and the people who skip to the front of the line. It seems to be the default behavior on a bike for some reason. People in cars accept waiting in line at a light just fine, and I haven't noticed the same issue with other cyclists on the roads.

Go out to Calverton or Remington.

Friend, good luck with that. Nothing on g-ds green earth is going to make things go your way. Ride safe and be a gent at all times, it is my best advice speaking as a guy who has commuted to work for more than 17 yrs. Yah just have to chill out when the MUT is clogged. Eff the asshats who ride unsafely, they are not you. Best thing I ever did to sooth my diseased mind is to consistently wear my team kit. Wearing my kit reminds me to be a nice boy when riding around town. It ain't easy being sleazy ;)

I know, I know. Just wanted to vent a little. The pushing into the weeds part was just a little joke. BSNYC, of course, raised the issue in a much more eloquent manner. And I'm much to quiet and meek to be mean, even to jackasses.
