Default done with garmin, thoughts on sigma or the new niterider line?

I hate my edge 305, it needs a charge all the time, like every ride, syncing the device to training center changes the values - a 2000' climb becomes 2341' and does the same for mileage. I don't like the way it looks, I don't give a shit about maps, I hate it. they are sending me my 3rd one and to ebay it goes. I ordered the http://www.sigmasport.de/us/produkte...punkt=features
this am when I ordered some other junk from excel, its cheap at 100 bucks but I heard it hard to use - I want something that has a altimeter and hr and will give me average hr. I now see that niterider is in the came with this puppy -

if cateye had something it would be game over as i like there things.

thoughts on the sigma, will it work good enough or has anyone played with the rebel 8?

    Thanks!

I have a sigma wireless, although not the one you are looking at. My main criticism with the sigma wireless system is that the pairing of the devices does not seem all that solid. My first go around did not pair the cadence. Sigma took care of it - their customer service is good. Another related gripe is that the wireless seems to be very sensitive to RF crosstalk - it will sometimes lose connection arbitrarily. Sometimes it reconnects in a short time, sometimes not until after a reset when it starts to look for signal again. There does not seem to be much consistency to it. Lately it has been taking a long time to reset the trip ODO function.

So far so good with my Sigmas (5 bikes worth - 3 road, TT, and cross).

I have one that occassionally gets "stupid" and gives a message about conflicting signals. It seems to regain its senses after a reset.

I had one other one that forgot where and who it was and started "speaking" dutch and talking in Kms. That one I had to re-program.

Lots of miles with just those two incidents.

I'm still pretty happy with them.

    Default done with all computers...

I love not knowing how fast, how far, how long I've been riding. There is true zen in being completely lost and just enjoying the scenery atmo.

Sorry to drift a bit, but can anyone explain WHY the Garmin numbers vary so much? You would think that 100 miles on the head unit would equal 100 miles on the PC. But yeah, there is a different number in Garmin Training Center and a different number yet when you download into Training Peaks. Heaven forbid you run the numbers through WKO's "GPS Altitude Correction"...that creates a whole new fictional reality....

Thats wierd, i have not had a single one of these issues and have been using one on three differernt bikes for just about a year. elevation and distance were almost spot on with my wired astrael and suunto watch during the camparison period when i first got it. the battery on mine consitantly will last for 10-12 hr, but I generally down load after most every ride so it charges up then.

Sounds like you're a candidate for no computer at all. Or a very minimal one.

the look of the cute little cateye - I am a candidate for a easy to use unit with gain and hr - ever used a polar? I am not the only one that thinks the iface is awful. the garmin issues are also well known, I know folks that have returned theres 5 times - this will be my 3rd. the reality is there are not many units that do what I want or that are any good.

    Default Almost...

a year on my 305 and really like it. I have had not problems with any variances. It trues up with my g/'s computer to compare distance and avg speed etc..

Sorry you haven't had luck, especially since Garmin stepped up to the plate for Chipotle.

For what it's worth, I have been using the Garmin 705 for a while now and haven't had any problems with it. The gradient readings get a bit wonky when the unit gets wet, but, other than that, it seems pretty solid. Also, as a side note, the 705/SRM combination is pretty good (now that some of the initial kinks have been ironed out).

The 705 is kind of big, though.

Default today is the last day

I am going to have that thing on my bike. looks like they are coming out with a replacement for training center. the unit is hit or miss, I already have enough of that going on in my life.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

There has not been a change on the unit to make the data match that of Training Center. We will be releasing a new fitness program soon, Garmin Connect, that may change this. It should be out by the end of September.
Please ship your Edge, no accessories, to:
    Garmin International
    Dock Door #24
    Attn RMA# ZW9178605
    1200 E 151st St
    Olathe, KS 66062

Please allow about 10-14 days from the date we receive your unit to process and ship out the new unit.

The Polar USED to be a nightmare with its interface, true dat!

BUT, they have come out with a vastly improved ird unit and the interface is 110% "good to go" now.

The rest of the functions, hrm-avg hrm, cadence-avg cadence, etc all work really well (I found better than the Garmin).

    Good luck!

    Thumbs up

my 305 kept turning off during rides. it was out of warranty a couple of months. i emailed them a scan of the original receipt and they took care of it.

i found them easy to deal with and they stood behind their product.

    good enough for me.

    cheers,

    shaner
