    Default classical lovers thread

I remember this concert as I was there. Brought tears to my eyes. I'm so glad I got to hear Herseth a few times before he retired. Best trumpet player ever, bar none. What a brass section. Pokorny (tuba) is a great swimmer with about 9 liter lung capacity.

    Anecdotes anyone?
    What do you all like?

Arnold Jacobs was one of the greatest musicians ever. He knew his technical shite as demonstrated here, but his musicianship was even better. Can't find anything on youtube, but his recordings are our there. His teachings are the foundation of brass playing today. The closest I've come to studying his teachings are from two players who studied with him and they are the bass trombone players in the Met Orchestra (Steve Norell and Hal Janks). Low brass people are funny guys.

Excellent books out there as well.

Charlie Vernon, the quintessential low brass guy. Amazing player and funny guy.

    Sorry for rambling.

    Some good listening.

if you get a chance to hear Omar Butler play trumpet you will be pleased. Wynton Marsallis is a fan. He's a recent Julliard grad.
We have had him and some other Julliard students and young alums over for dinner while they have played gigs in San Diego and they have been bright, talented and lots of fun. Since wife Leslie has had organ students go on to this fine school we have had invites to attend student recitals and classes on campus. Music lovers on a budget in NYC would do well to look into campus performances.

    Hey,

Not exactly "on topic" but whatev.

Czech out Gustavo Dudamel's version of the Shostakovich Symphony #10 and then look for someone else's version.

I think its effin' rad' how he makes the kids (yes, they are kids) rock EPO and how he stuffs caffeine pills in their food before a concert.

Joking aside, even though the playing is *slightly* less than pro, this rendition is by far my favorite.

Thanks for sharing that. I love Shostakovich. I have to dig up my version of #10, but that is a fantastic version.

Best thing about this is there is absolutely no cheating your way to the top. If you sound like the real deal, you are.
