    Default Book shelf photos

My wife and I received three oak book shelves as a wedding gift from her parents in 03. Prior to that we kept our books in stacked milk crates around the house. We had enough books at the time to fill all but two of the shelves. Those two shelves quickly filled with children's books and since then we just reused the old milk crates I had stored in the attic.
Yesterday our neighbors (Darel and Evelyn) asked us if we wanted there old pine book shelf they were replacing with an antique they inherited from Evelyns father whom passed away recently. After I enthusiastically accepted I found a place for the well worn shelf and started to fill it with books.

Sitting that close to the books brought back pleasant memories of trips to the library with my mother. I remember staring at long rows of books struggling to read the vertical print then just randomly picking books too look inside.

After I shelved the books I sat for a while and just looked at them.I enjoyed the experance so much that wanted to share it in the hope that some of you would enjoy it too.

These books pictured here arn't my favorites (two of my favorites Youth in Revolt by C.D. Payne and Wildes' The Picture of Dorian Gray are in another room altogether) There just random books on a shelf. I'm not too interested in favorites rather I want this to bring some attention to influential things that are close to you every day that can easily be over looked. Please post pictures of your books favorite or not I look forward to seeing them.
    Thanks,
    Lex

Default Moving in the Other Direction

In our old place, we had shelves and shelves and shelves of old books, some great, some crummy. When we downsized in '07, our new place didn't have room for more than a couple of bookshelves. So we gave away or sold almost all of them, except for a precious few that we had to hang on to. The problem became what to do with the new ones that we were sure to accumulate short of just culling them every few months.

Fortunately, the timing coincided pretty well with the release of this little goodie, which is now pretty much my entire bookshelf. I have the first generation, which holds a couple hundred books and several hundred more if you stick an SD card in it. The new version, just launched yesterday, holds thousands and is a little bit sleeker package. But I always have a good backlog of stuff to read on here, it takes up no room, and once you open the book, you're in the book, not the package. So the aesthetic drawback stops mattering pretty quickly.

I sort of miss having loads of books around me on shelves. But I used to miss having loads of records and CDs around me on shelves too. I got over that. I'm getting over this. Enjoy it while you've got the space.

    Verry cool.
Some critics of tecnoligy may site the ease with which that information may be lost but last time I checked most books and there shelves for that matter were combustable so to hell with that argument. I love usfull tecnoligy and it makes it even better when the cover looks that nice.
    Thanks for the response.

    A little off topic...
Ray do you think that Kindle is appropriate for someone who uses large print books?

Do you mean large format or just large PRINT? The Kindle (and I'm sure the Sony and any other e-reader) lets you adjust the type size to whatever's comfortable for you. If you need really big type for bad eyes, you can get it very easily. I usually stick to the three smallest type sizes depending on available light, but its nice to know how much bigger I could go if my eyes really start to suck.

If you mean large FORMAT, like text books and technical manuals, no, not yet. The screen is too small to work for those very well and the graphics aren't that sharp and are limited to B&W and grey scale. It also isn't great for newspapers or most magazines that are pretty graphic intensive. I really like it for text heavy magazines like the Atlantic, but that's about it. For me, its pretty much just about reading books, not all of the other things this technology will eventually be used for. I've seen that there are other companies with larger e-readers in development that will be able to comfortably hold a magazine sized page and will be good for text books and technical manuals and stuff. Color will be a big breakthrough for those kinds of applications. The thing that's nice about it is that its not backlit and doesn't have any screen flicker, so it really is just like reading from a paper page in terms of your eyes. I guess that "e-paper / e-ink" technology hasn't developed far enough to do color well yet, but I'm sure it won't be long.

For limited applications, its great right now. For expanded applications, its not ready for prime time yet, I don't think.

The cover was extra, but I'm a sucker for nice chit so I figured if I was gonna be reading off an ugly little piece of plastic, holding it in something nice was well worth it. I'm not worried about losing stuff. Once you've bought something, you can always download it again if you need to. And, frankly, once I'm done with a book, I'm usually pretty well done with it.

Thanks Ray. Mom's eyes are not great and was wondering about this. She reads an amazing amt. of books each week. I'll try and find a place that has these to test. Sounds like it might work.

Not sure where you'd find one to test, but here's a shot from the Amazon web site:

In my photos above, the text was on the second smallest, so you can see how much bigger you can go. There's some variation between books too, but not all that much.
