    Default Beautiful Objects - What have you come across lately?

    Saw this today. I do not drink or make coffee, but I want to hold this in my hand. I want to have it on my desk to touch as a stress reliever. I'll never forget the feeling of polishing a pair of 1034's before building them.

    Beyond bikes, (or not) what beautiful objects have you come across lately?

    I found a nickel from 1919 in my pocket. Indian on front, Buffalo on the back.

    This little piece of metal of not-much-value had been floating around in circulation for nearly a century.
    I wonder how many people had this nickel in their possession over the last hundred years.

    I got excited seeing this, then kinda bummed to find out it wasn't one piece.

    Beautiful objects I've seen recently:
    (note this is an aesthetic list, not necessarily adulterated by how the object functions, and doesn't include living things.)

    -Drive side Ren Herse Crank.
    -reidel stemless wine glass;
    -parker 51 aeromatic in blue-grey with a rhodium cap;
    -Leica iiif with the 50mm collapsible lens;
    -Eames Chair (with metal legs).

    Cheers,

    Will

    Beautiful objects and stuff.....

    And riding a friend's high wheel post ice cream ride enough to justify putting mine back on the road.

    And picking up some old school machinist tools. (For sale for anyone who is interested)

    Similarly, I've recently converted to a double-edged safety razor. Its a few minutes of clarity every morning.

    I've always found rangefinder cameras (using 35mm film), favored by photojournalists before and after WWII, to be gorgeous objects. I used them myself to do documentary work in the early '90's in Asia, just before the advent of widely available digital cameras.

    I came across a repair person in the US who is doing first class work to restore Contax rangefinder cameras. He usually has a couple on hand like the one below.

    The dominant professional rangefinder was the Leica M series. The most coveted and professional version was a black paint MP, made specifically for photojournalists. Amazingly, Leica Camera is still making a version of the MP today, albeit with some modern updates.

    GIVEN? Okay, I envy you.
    Good cyclists are:
    Visible, Predictable, Alert, Assertive and Courteous

    They also use the five layers of protection available.
    Layer 1: Control your bike
    Layer 2: Know and follow the rules of the road
    Layer 3: Ride in the smartest lane position
    Layer 4: Manage hazards skillfully
    Layer 5: Utilize passive protection.

    I just came across this guy in Tokyo have an exhibit of his copper tea sets. It was pretty interesting watching him hammer out a pot.
