Default Ye Old Mountain Bikes Go Here

Here's an ol' Specialized mountain bike, unearthed from a nook in the garage, untouched in several years. Cleaned it up, pumped up tires, a little lube on the chain & other parts, and it shifted, braked & handled perfectly. Gotta love that!

Nice welds on this too. Hecho in Los Estados Unidos no less!

Grip shift! Do they even make these anymore? It worked perfectly. Amazing, after all these years...

hah! I almost bought that exact bike, over at Belmont Wheelworks back in 1998. I remember the color, metal matrix frame and gussets.

And yes I still like grip shift... they do still make it I think but not for the top-end X9/X0 stuff?

Nowadays they are called twist shifters and are also available for X9/X0. They rock!
They do not make them for XX but I bet they will some time in the near future.

I like old mountain bikes, especially if there's a lot of neon colors!

i bought this at a bike shop in san mateo (i was living in burlingame at the time). no idea what year though, maybe mid-late 90's. forget the name, it was a pretty good sized shop and an adjunct to a family-owned toy store that had been there for many years.

'94 Bontrager Race. I was 14 when this bikes was made and I lusted after 'em in the pages of Mountain Bike Action. Now I own one. I guess that's cool, but all my teammates rag on the 1" fork.

Gonna go for 2:30 or less at Chequamegon on it and campaign a full XC season before 'cross starts up.
