there's that whole sub genus of folks that use aerobars as if they are sitting on a barstool resting their elbows on the bar waiting for a beer.
its a mighty thing to tick off the miles, your lower half all business and your upper half in full chillax.
its probably a huge part of what drives the aero-bar, mirror, and mustache-comb market.. and you know. god bless em. its the over washed black faded to almost reddish dirt saggy shorts and the smell of balls that bums me out.

I am betting that this post will not gather many players. Something about salonistas and ergostems that just do not seem to go together.
All that being said I must admit that there is a bike in my rack that sports one of these odd contraptions. It was my attempt to get my wife happy/comfortable on her trek 5200. _WHEN_ she rides it she is hell on wheels. A CF Trek with an ergostem..........WTF??!!
Cannot believe I just outed myself.
Should we ever have the opportunity to ride together you will understand my avatar.
On a walk with my family last night, I definitely passed a cyclist on a Trek or Specialized flat-bar hybrid/comfort bike, with aero bars, going about 12 mph.

To get it up   or to get it down  ... is the question.

Back in '91 Lemond spoke about the design of his new carbon bikes (then Carbonframes, now Calfee Design) noting their 'dropped' top tube (allowing for a shorter head tube) that accounted for his naturally aero position on the road bike. The bike would also double as his time trial bike through the use of a custom stem. I liked the idea and since I didn't have the patience to switch out stems, the ergo stem provided the solution. It also allowed the option to experiment with a radically low profile ala Chris Boardman (or Jan Ullrich who at one time had his bars pointed downward)
done right.

This bike always looked proper to me:
