    Default my first frame

Thanks to Ron Sutphin and Keith Anderson I've completed my first bike frame. The fillets aren't the prettiest or most perfect, but they're solid and the frame is super straight (at least according to the alignment table I was using). I learned a ton along the way and made a few mistakes, but the frame came out great and once I do a bit more filing and sanding it will be heading back to Oregon to get some paint by Keith.

Hopefully this is the first of many, even if I only build one every year or so. I'd also like to thank everyone here for their various posts and the healthy dose of reality you bring to the craft. Frame building is a difficult but fulfilling process and the info and perspective shared here is quite helpful, even if its not what a lot of people want to hear.

I'll post an after-paint photo in a few weeks.

    Nice one, prolix 21 -
I remember my first, and it's a very rewarding line to cross atmo.
    Continued success there!

sweet. my first frame is still my best and my workhorse. my first fillet frame wasn't so nice, but it should soon be superseded. i'm about to build two that i've had "on paper" for years.

building a few helps one appreciate the skills and intricacies involved-in a way that words and photos, etc. cannot.

so... a frame always looks pretty great after paint and without any parts, but then you start attaching things and your errors start becoming pretty apparent and become somewhat annoying

while my OCD approach to this adventure paid off in many ways, I've found that my sharp focus on certain measurements may have short changed me on other things. all that time I spent trying to get my axel to canti post spacing correct I somehow ended up with 70mm c-c spacing which has become a HUGE headache. 80mm is standard and I've got a pile of brakes and emails from people to prove it

anyway, for frame two I'm going to have a hefty checklist and I'll be dry-fitting things BEFORE paint

Sweet bike, good analysis of how to avoid headaches, and when e-Richie makes this t-shirt, I'll buy one.

so, building up this bike is taking just about forever. i'm not sure if i'm just dragging it out to keep myself occupied or if i'm lazy. either way, i'm in the 'test fit' phase, which has been rather nerve racking. needless to say, i have a growing laundry list of TO DO and TO NOT DO for the next frame. glad I haven't started it yet.

anyway, i'm test fitting parts and test fitting myself on it. so far it's good, but the fork feels awfully tall. axle to crown is 400mm, which seemed ok on paper and in bikeCAD, but in reality seems a little off. also looks a little tall to me.

When you toss some cross rubber in there it will look fine.

Don't go too nuts over thinking it at this point. Build it up, ride the hell out of it, and save the over thinking for the next one.

I'm not sure how you can wait so long. My first frame had barely cooled down before I started throwing parts on it!

Like Eric said, ride it a lot and you'll figure out where it needs to go. There's nothing like riding your own frame though, especially the first. Have fun!

Ain't that the truth! I've been replacing existing frames with ones with identical geometry, and I still have way more fun riding my own.

For some reason I like to drag builds out. I love riding but I also love the build. This bike has also overlapped a few other projects. Was building up/restoring a bike for my girlfriend, doing some repairs on another road bike and have been getting/building tooling for frame #2.

I should have this one done soon enough :)
