I was so thoroughly satisfied with my Rock Lobster purchase 2 years ago. It pained me to choose another builder when I ordered my soon to be delivered frame; I only did so because of my penchant for variety. Paul builds straight, soundly constructed frames that are a bargain.
Most days are 100miles...
Up early....before the heat...

The start is in Long Beach on June 26th....
And we need someone to help pace him till we get to Texas....around Dallas/ Houston area around July 10/11/12th...+/_ a few days...

A relative writes:

At a bike event yesterday in Vicenza, Italy, some bike parts factory celebrating its 80th Bday. A bunch of bikes and bike people and journalists where there with some old timer type bike racers.

I played it cool, of course the kid from NoDak is going to be asked to sit in the front row, on the side with nobody but Moser who instinctively slumped all over me like he was going to get a better wheel or something. I resisted the slump, thinking I had a greater purpose in this world or some bs.

So Eddy *($@% M. walks in and sits next to me, using me as a buffer from the uber Italianite. I do have a reason to be! Blahblahblah about the presentation. It got hot and long. Eddy was suffering and it finally ended. I never squealed once, nor did I do the decent thing and translate the insanely good stories about Tullio that Jan Jansen recounted, or Lemond's Tour tales. Heck the racers understood them, and Italians would never interrupt a show to explain what was being said. I was just a fly on the front row wall.

It's finished, and the last thing I want to do is ruin Eddy's exit. But his bike was on the stage, 3 meters away. I guessed it was his '69 bike, "Nono, thats my '72 bike: 44-53 with 14, 16, 18, 22, 24 in back."

Everyone is slipping away from the stage, I take out my camera and try to get it focused on his head tube badge, and maybe something with Campagnolo 80th in the back ground. But all along my semi mantra of "Don't be an asshole" is playing and I do not want Eddy to be mobbed, because I know the photographers and waiting to pounce on him.

And Mr Everything strolls into my digitalness and I have the most precious crappy shot in the world.

Ride lots, Eddy did.

Trying to reduce the bike collection and get the one do it all bike – is it possible?

In this day over over-specialization, I am trying to go against the trend and cull my bike collection. In the past 10 years it is amazing how...

In this day over over-specialization, I am trying to go against the trend and cull my bike collection. In the past 10 years it is amazing how bicycles (and motorcycles – I ride a scooter) have become so specialized that you need multiple bikes. What happened to the do-all bicycle or motorcycle?

Not that long ago when I was living in NYC, I thought it was extravagant to have a road bike, a mountain bike, and a track/street bike for urban use. Now I am living in suburban NJ and the bike collection has grown over the past few years mostly because I have the space.

In order of acquisition (since 2004 – way too many bikes before to list them all):
Kogswell Sport Touring (Rivendell Ramboulliet knock-off) – too big, was collecting dust, just sold.
Cannondale flat bar road bike – won’t sell, too sentimental – wife purchased it for me as a milestone birthday present.
Lynskey Sportive – fits rather well but not sure what to do with it. 39-49mm reach brakes and bontrager fork fits 28c without fenders but only 23c with fenders. No point in riding 23 with fenders.
Lynskey R230 – a bit too big. Just fits 25c with AlphaQ CS10 fork – thinking of selling it…any takers?
Lynskey CooperCX – thought I was going to try some cross. Built it up, never got settled on it, tried triple crank, cross crank, different offset seatposts, different stems, and different tires but realized it was too long and low at the front. – traded it in to Lynskey with an upcharge for their Sportive DISC –all parts and the fork moved over perfectly.
Lynskey Sportive Disc – built up with triple parts from the CooperCX and fenders. 30mm cross tires from the CooperCX did not fit (even without fenders) so I had to move to 28c tires with fenders.

I do not mean to sound like I am complaining. I am very lucky to have (or had) all of these bikes but I feel like it is getting out of control, taking over my life, and they are all not getting used. This led me to get a proper fit which showed the Kogswell was really too big, CooperCX to long and low up front, and the R230 a bit too long. I could just keep the Lynskey Sportive and Sportive DISC because they have the exact same geometry but neither one is really setup for what I want/need – this is not a reflection on Lynskey – they do make great products.

I do not race, I have no plans to race, I am more of a B17 rider than an A20 rider, I would like to try out some of the rail trails as long as I am in NJ, and I want to simplify my life….and bike collection. I know this is heresy with the N+1 crowd but that is where I am in life.

I am going to go custom. Looked at Seven and IF – can get some really great stuff from them. The only issue is that I keep coming back to the Hampsten Strada Biancha. I have traded a few emails with Steve and had 2 phone calls and then backed off to be respectful of his time because until I put down a deposit I do not think it is fair to ask anything else of him. We started with a SB but then I sent him some fit info on my Lynskey’s and he came back with a Gran Paradisio in Ti. I called him to share that I may have confused the situation and was looking more towards an SB or Max. He drew up a SB and said he could do it with Max tubing if that is the way I wanted to go.

Sorry for the history lesson but it will help with my questions…

Can the Hamsten Strada Biancha (in Ti or Max steel) really be your only road bike?

Is it annoying to take fenders on or off depending on the weather that day, the ride you are planning on doing, or the season (assuming Sheldon fender nuts)?

If you have a SB, do you keep 2 wheelsets – one lighter with 23c or 25c and one more robust with 28c or 30c tires to make changes for a ride that much quicker/easier?

At what point do couplers really make fiscal sense?
(I now have 3 brothers in or around Denver and will probably go out at least once a year with a bike)

Do people still use ten speed Shimano 105 (or Ultegra) double crank groups with a mountain (DeoreLX or DeoreXT) rear derailleurs and a 11x32 or 11x34 cassette to give you more gear options without going triple? (after knee surgery I like to have bailout gears if I need them)

Is there another bike/frame you would suggest as a do-it-all road type bike?
(not cross – want calipers and I looked at a few but the GEOs just do not work for me - long torso, short legs, short arms – my body screams for a custom setup)

Thanks in advance....new to this forum....already went through the 48 pages of the Hampsten thread in the gallery section.

mistake one, my dog tags hanging out as ima hanging & pushing off the foot-boards..
mistake two, ahole next to me watching the oklahoma tragedy and states, "if they had been praying or right with God, would have been saved.."
i pay no attention..
mistake one for ahole, reaches over and touches my shoulder and says, "hey buddy, what do you think.." i reply without loosing a stroke or turning my head, "i am not your buddy, i lost my lucky dog a few years back and he was my buddy, and if you don't stfu, you are not going to be lucky.."
he keeps on grinding my ass, so i stop, turn on the seat facing him --- about my size & 1/2 my age --- and ask him if he knows what "disemboweled" means..
he immediately goes and gets the owner dave --- dave is a true friend and owns 8 gold's gyms around orlando area..
dave informs him that he is lucky i didn't "tear his heart out.."
fu-k, never got the chance to tutor ahole for def of/for "disemboweled.."

just one of those days,
