one of those days, but a nice smile from my brother jonathon..

raining around 5-ish so went to the gym and jumped on the erg to pull 10k meters fp under 55 minutes..
wide screen above with fox entertainment, not worthy of calling objective news, mighty close to wwe wrestling..

mistake one, my dog tags hanging out as ima hanging & pushing off the foot-boards..
mistake two, ahole next to me watching the oklahoma tragedy and states, "if they had been praying or right with God, would have been saved.."
i pay no attention..
mistake one for ahole, reaches over and touches my shoulder and says, "hey buddy, what do you think.." i reply without loosing a stroke or turning my head, "i am not your buddy, i lost my lucky dog a few years back and he was my buddy, and if you don't stfu, you are not going to be lucky.."
he keeps on grinding my ass, so i stop, turn on the seat facing him --- about my size & 1/2 my age --- and ask him if he knows what "disemboweled" means..
he immediately goes and gets the owner dave --- dave is a true friend and owns 8 gold's gyms around orlando area..
dave informs him that he is lucky i didn't "tear his heart out.."
fu-k, never got the chance to tutor ahole for def of/for "disemboweled.."

just one of those days,

You may recall the knowledge dropping (and/or shit stirring) that I did in SignatureJustin's threads a few months back when he was looking for information on this sort of bike: http://www.velocipedesalon.com/forum...ead-30742.html | http://www.velocipedesalon.com/forum...ere-30790.html | http://www.velocipedesalon.com/forum...ack-31233.html — or the thread about that 650b Firefly — or my 6 post info bomb on wtf the deal is with porteur racks. If you can get past the butthurt those threads make for great background on what makes this more than a homercar.

Well I recently did the initial build on my latest one and have put 500 miles on it: New Elephant - a set on Flickr

Frame and fork built by Glen Copus of Elephant Bikes, see the BikeCAD Model for dimensions.

Versus my Rawland rSogn the chainstays and front-center are 1cm shorter each, the BB is 5mm lower, and the seat tube angle is nearly a degree slacker.

I designed around disc brakes so I could use cheap 650b carbon rims that are 20x stiffer and stronger than the light alloy ones I was using at the same weight (I 'm on my third rear rim on my Rawland!). The extra 4mm of inside width vs. a normal 23mm rim doesn't make the tires any wider, but it does make them significantly rounder which took a bit of getting used to.

The Extra Léger Hetres are set up tubeless, and the low rolling resistance of that combo is definitely noticeable, but I find myself inflating them to 30-35psi instead of 25-30 because of the lack of compression damping in the casing. The sidewalls even wrinkle visibly under load! I find normal Hetres at 20psi to still be perfectly rideable, but these sag a lot when that low and squeal obscenely just turning the bars on asphalt.

The bike is 23.3lbs as shown without fenders or bottlecages: frame is 4lbs even, fork is 2.2lbs, and the rack is 1.2lbs. I could shave at least a third of a pound off the rack by making it in 5/16" x 0.028" instead of 3/8" x 0.035", and might do that next time, I just didn't want to change to many variables in the design at once.

The TT & DT are single oversize OX Platinum in 7/4/7 with the longest center butts, the seattube is 28.5 6/4/5 S3, the seatstays are also S3 in .5mm 16/11 taper, and the chainstays are from the Dedacciai 29er tubeset. The fork uses a Nova crown with matching oversize 29/21 blades and a superlight steerer (normal steel 9/8" steerers are thick enough to thread for some fucking reason).

By the numbers the front end should be marginally stiffer than my 9/6/9 standard-diameter bikes (like Columbus SL). I was pleasantly surprised that it's definitely a bit more flexible under pedaling, but also doesn't get bounced off its line as much plowing through a rock garden. Perhaps the superlight seat tube has something to do with that, but it's hard to tell. See the porteur rack thread for details, but the main charm of this sort of geometry is that you can build the frame to be super responsive/sprightly without affecting the load-carrying ability.

Here it is dirty on my way home from an overnight bike camping trip on the North Fork Snoqualmie:

Obviously it still needs to be painted, that'll get done in a few couple months with a rather ridiculous design, the vintage splash tape should serve as a clue.

I still need to add some bosses and wire anchor points to the front rack, make a custom mini rear rack for it to hold a stuffsack when camping and serve as a taillight mount, make some weigle-style mounting hardware for the Honjo fenders I have for it, do a custom wiring harness with lapel-mic cable, and machine accessory clamps for the paired triple seat tube bosses to hold a pump and/or folding saw.

When the rain starts letting up again I'll put 2.3" knobbies on it and take it out for some real mountain biking.

Rode 189km w/ 3000m climbing on Saturday and noticed when I stopped for a sandwich a strong burning sensation on the top of my left kneecap. I didn't notice it during the ride so I ignored it just hoping to be able to make it home which I did fine. Monday I went for a short recovery spin and didn't notice anything and tonight I rode 40km w/ two 5-7km climbs and my kneecap is sore w/ sharp pain to the touch but I didn't notice any discomfort riding. My longest ride this season was 140km and I often climb around 2400m elevation training so I don't think I did too much too soon but 7+ hours in the saddle was definitely a long day. I have been tweaking my saddle height and thought I was happy with it but if anyone's experienced a similar pain in the front of their kneecap I'd love to hear how you remedied it.

1st of the two is the Anvil fixture. Its the older style, but is in great working condition. - $800

2nd is a Sputnik mitering fixture. Again its the older style, but its practically new. It comes with (4) blocks, 1", 1.125" (miss labelled), 1.25" and 1.5". - $1000

Shipping is not included on either fixture and if your local to Central Ohio your more than welcome to come and check them out. Here's the kicker, I need to sell both of these to fund a future purchase. I thought I'd be able to post pictures, but forgot my camera cord at home, I will post some tonight.

I typically ride my old school steel frame/fork with a white industries H2/Kinlin XR200/CX Ray (20 radial spokes) wheel. But recently substituted it with an Alchemy ELF/kinlin XR200/CX-Ray - 24 spokes crossed 2x wheel.

I immediately noticed a change in the ride characteristics despite using the same tires & pressure. The bike descended & cornered much 'better'. Assuming the Alchemy wheel is stiffer (btw, how would one quantify this?), it made me wonder if a 'stiffer' wheel could provide some of the improved handling attributed to an oversized headtube and fork steerer on more modern frames?

I'm riding the following route on Sunday 5/26. Probably rolling out around 7:30 or 8:00 in the morning. Route is 98% asphalt and can be re-routed to avoid the gravel on Kings Highway you don't want to do any gravel. I plan on riding my Colnago with 22mm tubulars.

It's a tough route - ~63 miles with well in excess of 100 ft/mile ascent, so I'm aiming for 4 hours, including a quick pit stop in Shelburne falls. It includes Bardwell's Ferry Bridge, which any good Western Mass bike ride really should.

Please PM me if you'd like to join.

Another Bicycling Magazine showed up in my mailbox yesterday (I don't subscribe. And it's the July issue? It's May, right?), and today I flipped through it at lunch. The 'legal issue' article made me want to bang my head into a brick wall. The premis of the article is that if you crash your bike, even by yourself with no outside interference, it might not be your fault, and you can sue someone/something for damages. A few examples were given:

-crash on a snowy road, which the DOT hasn't cleared quickly enough
-a pot hole which hasn't been fixed in a timely manner
-railroad tracks

It made my head hurt. But maybe that's because my Daddy always taught me to be responsible for myself and my own actions, even if my own actions were stupid.

Flip to page 32 if you want to read it yourself.

Many folks here know I'm part of the Colavita Fl Racing Jr Development team. I'm the money guy, the guy who signs the paperwork and makes sure we are viable. I have no effect on performance, but I enjoy giving back and being part of helping others. The team is my local cycling family. As the school year is winding down for our juniors a handful of our longest tenured are graduating from high school. It's great to see the credit they are receiving for their scholastic achievements. This group of kids are all going on to very good schools and are pursuing really worthwhile endeavors. I can't help but think that competition, team work, goal setting and comraderie hasn't been among the ingredients to their success. The boys and girls that race for us also have very healthy attitudes towards each other, especially the opposite sex. We've accomplished many great things with the kids on the bike, but nothing means more to me than seeing the kids become well adjusted young adults. We've had many hundreds of race wins, podiums at Natz and in international competition at the UCI level, but I know these kids have the best parts of their lives ahead of them and maybe we as a team were a part of that.
